Family requested pie + potato wedges for supper yesterday, so hubby and I set off to make fresh pastry. 3 years of perfecting it, and now we’re our own suppliers 😭

Plot twist: The leftovers didn’t even cut it for the custard slices we planned for dessert 😬 Back to the kitchen I go.

After years of being supplied, we now officially supply our own pies + pastry. If you ask me, that’s a milestone worth celebrating 🥳 Alhamdulilah

I officially nailed my favourite pies 😭😅

Took me 3 years to get it right — layered on the inside, crispy on the outside. Homemade pie is now a monthly staple in our home. This month my little family got spoiled with a large Pepper Steak Pie for Eid… and they cleaned out the whole tray 😒

My toddler has the fussiest, most difficult taste buds. Food has to be bland. At this point I’m wondering if I brought home the right baby almost 3 years ago 🤷🏽‍♀️ Texture matters too, so he gets pastry pieces as a snack. Add potato wedges and suddenly it’s a full meal 🤦🏽‍♀️

My eldest is no better. She grew up eating at fancy spots, but now she refuses them because “Mom’s dishes are just better.” I refuse to let it go to my head… but she compared me to The Capetonian restaurant and said I won hands down 😬 Alhamdulilah!

The one thing I appreciate about my little family would be how simple they are, if momma ain't feeling well, they'll be happy with Grilled Cheese on a Sunday, I've been experiencing symptoms of sciatica, now this has been coming on since my first pregnancy almost 11 years ago, it was "supposed" to fall away after pregnancy, instead it just grew over time, poor posture may also be to blame and the horrible chairs most offices have these days. The last week was the worst, I was ready to go to the ER, I just couldn't any more with the pain and the day hospital keep saying "they're finding nothing" multiple x-rays and it's "nothing"🤷🏽‍♀️ anyhoo... So hubby was on supper duty for most of this week with me providing instructions from our bed, yesterday we decided to take the kids to meet Bluey and Bingo and on our way back we figured let's get some fish and chips, you'd think that would be enough for my family but nope within an hour my eldest was like "so what we're having for supper" I wanted to die! Literally die, I was totally ready...😒 So I pulled out some pie pastry from the freezer, I made a few weeks back, made a chicken and spinach filling but we only just had it for lunch today🤦🏽‍♀️ I used my muffin tin to shape these pies, didn't do it perfectly but we move... I also didn't have eggs for egg wash but I hoped the sesame seeds makes up for it🙄 each of us had two with some wedges and I just feel like I had a whole Sunday lunch cos yoh... I'm Dik ge-eet, must be the pain talking alhamdulilah, my pastry doesn't give heart-burn! And this was definitely the bed-rest comfort food I needed 😮‍💨

I swear this order took me back 10 years ago, when I first started out - there was so much chaos in our kitchen and I eventually started to feel so unprepared, nervous... So much so I forgot the salad! Urgh... I felt so bad on so many levels from the moment the order left our kitchen but I did it, alhamdulilah.. I did it!

Our page was hacked, just an FYI and META is not helping me retrieve it but we move... We had the craziest weekend... We were so stressed out with our chicken not arriving in time, to only having one working plate on the stove and of course we have an attention demanding toddler, he ain't nothing like his sister was... She was so passive every time I had an order, not this boy - nah he sat on me, on my head, on my shoulders - all while I was busy trying to fold Samoosas btw, I literally only started with fillings and this whole order yesterday at 3am😮‍💨 The Roti was our greatest challenge, we started frying last night already and we still weren't done on-time, if I must be honest - I was disappointed with myself for (1) being almost 2 hours behind schedule. (2) I forgot to pack the complimentary salad and mom wasn't available as a short cut and (3) I didn't get decent photos 😩 that was definitely the icing on the cake. Hubby suggested I shouldn't be so hard on myself but hold up - this was our first big order for 2026, how you gonna tell me I shouldn't be so hard on myself.
Anyways, massive s/o to Shauna and Crew for entrusting us with your order, being patient and of course - it was lovely to see you😅 my sincere condolences to you and your family on the passing of your dad, we wish him a happy heavenly birthday 🥳 and we pray for light on his journey beyond. We wish you all the best for the ceremony being held today... Oh yes... And finally WELCOME TO CAPE TOWN!!! 🥳🤩

Sjoe, 10 years ago I moved back to my Kuils River with my daughter, no job, no money, I had packed up and left my marriage and what had started Sakeenah's Catering and Events on the streets of District Six, I sucked at marketing, I still do and today I am task with managing my boss's marketing and I hit a major creative block already... anyways - I tried to market Sakeenah's Catering and Events and a lovely lady reached out to me, I am so sorry I can't remember your name🥺 I remember she had a Ladies Tea or High Tea event at her place of business and Soli Philander was her guest speaker - my shattered nerves, anxiety and so much more - this man lived on the streets of Woodstock, I was a newbie - I was in the competition of my life😮‍💨 needless to say, she forwarded me a screenshot, a message from Soli confirming how much he enjoyed our savouries and koeksisters, alhamdulilah. He gave me the confidence that I could do it for anyone - Thank you Sir!! RIP🕊️🕊️🌸

🌸Story Time🌸

Yesterday we had our first order for 2026 go out, sadly I couldn't take photos because my phone is broken and its rather too much to use the laptop and try to capture a picture, needless to say, I asked our customer to forward us pictures when she starts to bake off. Now it was only one order and this left us with some leftover Pie filling and Pastry, so I quickly slapped together a Homemade Steak Pie and a salad for us. Fam, I cried like a baby last night - all happy tears, I spent the last two years trying to make my own Puff Pastry - my husband enjoyed the pastry from the get-go, I wasn't too convinced I was doing a good job but I kept trying until I got it right and I did, light, fluffy, crispy/flaky on the outside and a buttery layers on the inside. I turned to my husband and asked him to help me, he asked with what, I said "I need to stop underestimating myself, I need you to help me stop" and I burst out crying and said to him "You have no idea how this is making me so happy right now" needless to say he literally enforces positive energy, shows me my worth and tells me "others underestimate you, you don't underestimate you" every single day.
Now we don't get support from family and having started a business with little to no capital, fighting depression, handling a household has not been the easiest of tasks, I am certain this business was supposed to be on top already but instead of always trying to succeed or place myself at the top, I focussed more on doing what I love and doing what I love gave me the slow progress, I have taken time to perfect my craft, I choose quality all the time. I also put a lot of effort into doing this...

We are coming back - no official date as yet but we are making a comeback and this time its going to be even better than before🤞
