In this morning’s class, Anna shared a thought about love—
That another person is not here to complete or fix us, but to walk beside us as a whole, imperfect person.
On Heritage Day, it landed for my birth country.
Today, we celebrate what has been handed down—language, food, dress, land, music, ritual and memory.
But we also live with histories that do not feel the same in every body.
Perhaps love of country and others is not declaring it perfect. Perhaps it is staying present to its beauty and its wounds. Telling the truth. Making room for stories unlike our own. And continuing to walk beside one another.
Light the fire. Bring what your people taught you. Leave with curiosity about someone else’s.
Happy Heritage Day, South Africa 🇿🇦
