We’ve launched a Safe Space Pilot 👏
In response to the critical shortage of safe night-time spaces in our city, Streetscapes — in partnership with and — launched a 3-month Safe Space pilot.
Over three months, the space supported 132 stays, with consistent nightly use and a high number of repeat visits. Many of those accessing the space are navigating chronic homelessness, trauma, and substance use — often without stable support systems.
Beyond providing a physically safe environment, the space prioritised psychosocial support and meaningful human connection.
Peer engagement is a key strength of the model.
Around 70% of clients participated in a one-on-one sit-down session with a peer, creating intentional space for support, reflection, grounding and harm-reduction conversations. These engagements are trauma-informed and relationship-based, helping to stabilise individuals in moments of vulnerability.
Multiple referrals were made into Streetscapes programmes for ID support, group programmes and reintegration pathways, ensuring that the Safe Sobering Space acts as an entry point into longer-term care.
This shows that the Safe Sobering Space is not just a place to sober up — it is a pathway into stability, dignity and support.
Overall, the pilot demonstrates:
• Consistent nightly demand
• A calm, safe and well-managed environment
• Strong peer–client trust
• Clear pathways into longer-term support
The peer-led approach is working in this environment. It reduces harm, improves night-time safety, and offers people a respectful, trauma-informed space where they are seen, heard and supported.
The next step is expanding peer services into the daytime to reduce repeat stays and strengthen ongoing substance-use support.
Safe spaces matter. Dignity matters. Partnerships work. Community works.
