What separates the Best from the rest…

A great Chef, yes. Great Staff on the floor, always. But look closer at this room…...

That is a chef in whites standing at a P&L. That is the commercial, finance and marketing team around the table with him, line by line, number by number. No service bell, no plating, no applause. Just the work that happens long before the first guest walks in.

Behind every award winning and profitable restaurant is a team of dedicated and calculated professionals you will never see on the pass. They support the vision, they protect it, and they hold it to account.

This is how we live our foundations:
Meticulous planning.
Clear communication.
Flawless ex*****on.

The awards go on the wall. The discipline happens in here.

1,881 kilometres across the Western Cape. The fishermen who handed us the catch. The farmers who knew what the soil could give. The team that showed up every single day and cooked like everything depended on it. The guests who sat at the table and trusted us with their evening.
Tonight, the world recognised what all of it became.

We are proud to share that Journey Urchin Restaurant has been honoured with two prestigious titles at the World Culinary Awards 2026:
🏆 Africa's Best Fine Dining Experience 2026
🏆 South Africa's Best Culinary Experience 2026

We are so deeply grateful. To the Western Cape, to our team, and to every guest who made this journey with us.

Here's to bringing more pride to our culture, our heritage, our land, and our food.

The Western Cape sits at the southern tip of Africa, where two oceans meet, where mountains fall into vineyards and the landscape changes every hour you drive. Our menu travels, one course at a time.

We see it in your faces. The moment a plate arrives and the conversation stops on its own. The look across the table when something tastes exactly the way it should. Guests who came for dinner and left carrying a piece of this place home with them.

We have been building towards something. This is what it has looked like through your eyes.

Some menus are created in the kitchen. This one began much further away.
Across fishing villages, farm kitchens, and open land, the team discovered the flavours, people, and stories that would eventually come together on the Journey Menu. Every dish carries the memory of a place, a person, and a life experience encountered along the way, brought together through thoughtful cooking and a deep respect for where it comes from.

A menu shaped by the Western Cape, brought to life by the entire team, and served as a collection of stories on the table.

Next, we show you what it feels like to sit at that table.

The land was only half the story. The other half was the people. Grandmothers cooking the way their mothers taught them, grandfathers who read the tides better than any chart, and recipes passed down through generations.

Then came the ingredients — fresh from the sea, farms and fields, each carrying the story of where it came from.

We drove endlessly, stopping wherever the story felt worth hearing. We listened, learned and brought home the people, ingredients and heritage behind every flavour — to share with the world.

The Western Cape doesn't give itself up easily.
You have to go looking for it. Down coastal roads before the sun comes up. Into fishing villages where the catch decides the menu. Along farmlands where the soil tells you what's ready and what isn't. We drove 1,881 kilometres of it - slowly, with intention, stopping wherever the story felt worth hearing.

This is where the Journey Menu begins. And next, we show you what we brought back.

Something new is taking shape in the Urchin kitchen.

As spring arrives across the Western Cape, Chef Marcus Gericke and his team have been listening - to the season, to the land, to the producers and traditions that have always shaped this menu. The new à la carte menu launching in October carries all of that forward. Spring’s freshest produce. Heritage at the heart of every dish.
The Western Cape, in a new light. Coming this month.

Behind every dish at Urchin is a person with a story.
Chef Marcus Gericke didn’t build a kitchen - he brought together people whose histories live in the food they make. The Western Cape has a way of getting into you, into your cooking, into the way you hold a knife and the instinct behind every decision on the plate.
At Urchin, that’s not coincidence. It’s the point.

South Africa’s food has always carried more than flavour.
It carries the spice routes, the harvest seasons, the hands that passed recipes down without ever writing them out. At Urchin, Chef Marcus Gericke treats that history as the foundation - cooking with local ingredients not just for what they taste like, but for what they mean, where they come from, and which tradition they belong to.
Every dish on the menu is a conversation with the past. Every plate, a way of keeping something alive that deserves to stay alive.
This is South African heritage, told through food.

At Urchin, what’s in the glass is as deliberate as what’s on the plate.

1,881 kilometres across the Western Cape - through fishing villages, farm kitchens, and the wide open Karoo - became the Journey Menu. Every dish rooted in a place, a person, a tradition that deserved a table worthy of it. And alongside each course, a w**e chosen not for its label but for the story behind the producer. Cocktails and mocktails that bring something unexpected, something alive, to every moment in between.
This is a full experience, from the first sip to the last bite.

Some years deserve to end around a table that means something.
At Urchin, the year end experience is a journey through the Western Cape - a spread built on the flavours, the traditions, and the ingredients that have shaped South African food for generations. This is not just a year end function. It is a homage to the land, the people, and the stories that made the year what it was.
Gather your group. End the year the right way.

Some dishes taste like they’ve always been here.
The pickled fish on the second Journey menu is one of them. A Cape Town staple, handled by Chef Marcus Gericke with the same care and respect it has always deserved. Nothing overdone. Nothing lost. Just the flavour, exactly as it should be.
