The Black Label beer has been called Zamalek by many South Africans.
But where did this nickname originate?
Originally known as Black & White Lager, it was rebranded as Black Label in the 1920s and introduced to South Africa by SA Breweries in the late 1960s after they purchased the rights to brew it here.
In the 1990s, an Egyptian football club named Zamalek — whose colors are black, white, and red - thrashed local soccer team Kaiser Chiefs. Local fans declared that the Zamalek club was as strong as Carling Black Label.
