Bathurst is set to hear the thunder of history this Heritage Day, Thursday 24 September, at the Bathurst Agricultural Museum. Organised by the Cannon Association of South Africa, the event will recreate the historic Dutch Call-Up System, a communication method that once used cannon fire to send messages across great distances. As part of a national filming project, participating sites across the country will fire cannons in a coordinated sequence, with our local synchronised firing taking place at 12.45pm.

Local military reenactment historian and Master Cannoneer Basil Mills will command the Eastern Cape segment of the artillery demonstration. Visitors will have the opportunity to see the careful preparation and firing process up close, complete with plenty of smoke and thunder. The museum also offers a hands-on approach to local history, allowing guests to explore machinery, tools, and reminders of South Africa's agricultural past.

Once the cannons fall silent, the Ploughman Pub will host a bring-and-braai on the museum grounds. Braai packs are available from the bartender, and the lapa will provide a comfortable spot to sit back and enjoy freshly prepared sides for R65.

Date: Thursday, 24 September 2026
Time: Synchronised Firing at 12.45pm
Venue: Bathurst Agricultural Museum
