Gaua Ladies Water Music is Coming to Turtle Bay Lodge this Saturday 26th September 2026 !** π
An unforgettable afternoon of traditional water music β and we're thrilled to invite you all to experience it for yourselves!
The performers are from the one of only two groups on Gaua still practising this incredible art form. They're currently in Santo sorting passports and visas for an exciting opportunity to perform in Australia β and Gaua, being such a small, remote island in the Banks group, doesn't see many visitors, so these performances in Santo are a rare and special opportunity for them to share their culture with bigger crowds.
Water music is a traditional performance art passed down through generations of women on Gaua Island. Standing waist-deep in the sea, the performers slap, scoop, and swirl the water's surface with their hands to create rich, rhythmic sounds that echo the natural world around them. It's more than a performance β it's storytelling, and a spiritual connection to the sea and the environment that has shaped their lives for centuries.
