A few fun facts about the Heacocks...The Heacock Legacy: Three Brothers, One Football Tradition

The story of Jim, Jeff, and Jon Heacock is one of family, faith, education, and football. Spanning generations, the Heacock name has become synonymous with excellence in coaching and a lifelong connection to Muskingum University (formerly Muskingum College).

Clint Heacock: The Foundation

The Heacock legacy began with Clint Heacock, a standout football player at Muskingum during the 1930s. An All-Ohio Athletic Conference performer, Clint established a standard of hard work, integrity, and sportsmanship that inspired his sons to pursue careers in athletics and education. His influence reached far beyond the football field, shaping a family devoted to mentoring young people.

Jim Heacock: Defensive Mastermind

The oldest of the brothers, Jim Heacock graduated from Muskingum in 1970 after starring as a football player. His coaching career began at his alma mater before advancing through the college ranks.

Jim served as head coach at Illinois State University before joining Ohio State University under Jim Tressel. As defensive coordinator, he helped build one of the nation's elite defenses and earned the prestigious Broyles Award in 2007 as college football's top assistant coach.

Jeff Heacock: The Heart of Muskingum Football

Jeff Heacock followed in his father's footsteps, graduating from Muskingum in 1976 after helping lead the Fighting Muskies to an Ohio Athletic Conference championship.

At just 27 years old, Jeff became Muskingum's head football coach in 1981. For the next 26 seasons, he guided the Fighting Muskies while also mentoring countless student-athletes. Following his coaching career, he transitioned into university administration, continuing his service to Muskingum in student affairs and external relations.

Jon Heacock: Innovation and Excellence

The youngest brother, Jon Heacock graduated from Muskingum in 1983 with a degree in health and physical education. Like his brothers, he began coaching immediately after graduation.

Jon's coaching journey took him through University of Toledo, University of Michigan, Youngstown State University, Indiana University, Kent State University, and ultimately Iowa State University.

As head coach at Youngstown State and later as Iowa State's defensive coordinator, Jon became nationally recognized for his innovative defensive schemes, particularly the modern 3-3-5 defense that influenced programs across college football. He retired in 2025 after an extraordinary 43-year coaching career.

A Family Built on Coaching

Together, the Heacocks represent one of Ohio's most accomplished football families:

Clint laid the foundation as a Muskingum football standout.

Jim became one of college football's premier defensive coaches and a Broyles Award winner.

Jeff dedicated more than two decades to leading Muskingum football.

Jon earned national recognition as one of college football's most respected defensive innovators.

From the classrooms and football fields of Muskingum to some of the biggest stadiums in America, the Heacock family's impact has been measured not only in victories but also in the thousands of student-athletes they have mentored. Their legacy reflects the values of leadership, discipline, education, and service—qualities that continue to define both the Heacock name and the tradition of Muskingum football.
