Horseshoe crab spawning season is beginning! ๐ŸŒ•

With spring underway, spawning activity for horseshoe crabs is starting to pick up along our coast. These ancient creatures come ashore during the highest tides, typically around the full and new moons, to lay their eggs on sandy beaches and in our marshes.

We need your help! If you spot horseshoe crabs on the beach or in the marsh, please report your observations. Your sightings provide valuable data that help us track spawning activity and support conservation efforts.

Report your observations using the link below. Make sure to include location, date/time, number of crabs seen, and a photo if possible!

Every report makes a difference. Thank you for helping us monitor and protect horseshoe crabs!

So weโ€™ve decided to start our own Ghost Trap(aka abandoned crab trap/pot) recovery program! To the best of our knowledge the state of Georgia( unlike Maryland & North Carolina) does not encourage this type of program. Recovering these traps is difficult and dirty work but Ghost Traps continue catching even without bait in them. We got 7 traps, a bouy & a cool bait bucket releasing 3 crabs.๐Ÿฆ€๐Ÿฆ€๐Ÿฆ€โ€ฆ.Crab On.๐Ÿ˜Ž

Many of you spend time on the water fishing, boating, paddling, or enjoying South Carolinaโ€™s coast in other ways, and we need your help documenting abandoned crab traps. These traps still have their buoys but are clearly no longer being fished, often so heavily fouled that you canโ€™t read the letters on the buoy anymore. When left in the water, they can become navigational hazards, damage important habitats, and continue trapping marine life. Your reports will help us map where these traps occur and inform future efforts related to marine debris along our coast. ๐ŸŒŠ

If you see an abandoned trap anywhere along the SC coast, please report it using the survey linked below. Turning on location services and including a photo helps us document it accurately. Even a single report makes a difference. When combined with others, it helps us identify patterns across the coast. Thank you to everyone who has already contributed!
