What a beautiful event that we were so very honoured to host at Original Candy Kitchen! We hope you enjoyed your time as much as we enjoyed having you! Happy Thursday, Beautiful Faces! That's right, no Friday post because we are fortunate to be celebrating Juneteenth, a day to recognize our freedoms. May we be grateful as well as vigilant to protect and (re)establish freedoms across our nation and in our communities.
On that note, we were so blessed today to convene at the Original Candy Kitchen in Williamson, where we were welcomed warmly by Mary and her amazing staff. The "regular" patrons were so gracious to lend us a wall of tables to hold a cafe there. Everyone raved about the food and we had a lot of fun playing bingo and only slightly disrupting the atmosphere with our closing song. The sweet treats were top notch, too!
If you're a family or friend caregiver for someone living with dementia, Alzheimer's Disease, or other cognitive/memory condition, you know that the "everyday" act of going out for a meal at a restaurant can bring challenges. Menus can be complicated, hard to read (or absent!). Ambient noise can be overwhelming, and people can become visibly impatient with slower movement, thinking, or speaking.
Memory cafes help reduce some of the stigma associated with being "out in public with dementia." It can be daunting to navigate alone. When we all get together, we are a community looking after one another, and helping break down the stigma little by little.
