Week #38 Nebraska - Ground beef and cabbage

The “Cornhusker State”

The nickname “cornhusker state” comes from the fact that in earlier times, the locals used to harvest the corn by hand “husking” before machinery was used. Nebraska is the only state to bear a nickname based on a college football team – the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Nebraska is the only state in the U.S. whose legislature is unicameral and nonpartisan. A unicameral parliament or unicameral legislature is a legislature which consists of one chamber or house.

🌊Nebraska is the only triply land-locked U.S. state, which means that to reach an ocean, gulf, or bay from Nebraska, one must travel through at least three states.

🚂 “The Magnificent Machinery: Exploring North Platte’s Bailey Yard”
The eight-mile Bailey Yard in North Platte, Nebraska, is the largest railroad classification in the world. As many as 14000 train cars pass through it every day.

🌲The National Forest in Nebraska is America’s biggest hand planted forest, which covers 141,159 acres (57,125 hectares) of land. J. Sterling Morton introduced a state holiday in 1872, to encourage tree planting in the state. Forty-five other states had followed suit by 1920.

🦴Mammoth fossils are in abundance here
State can also be considered as the burial ground of fossils because it is considered that as many as ten mammoth fossils are buried under an average square mile of land in Nebraska. Note that mammoth bones have been found in all 93 state counties. The University of Nebraska State museum displays the bones of the largest mammoth discovered in the state.

💨 It is also true that Nebraska is in the middle of Tornado Alley. That is because of the climate mix of this area that causes some extreme weather conditions.

🚜 Almost all (91%) of Nebraska is farmland. 1 in 4 jobs in Nebraska are related to agriculture. The state has nearly 80,000 miles of rivers and streams that add to the state’s natural resources.

🌽The amount of land used to produce corn and livestock in Nebraska is greater than in any other state in the U.S.

Since Nebraska is the home of Runza, a regional fast-food chain famous for its signature yeast-dough bread pockets stuffed with seasoned ground beef, cabbage, and onions. That’s how we created this weeks pizza.

Another home run 🧢⚾️🏟️

This was quite the undertaking this year to find creative ways to represent all 50 States - some weeks were questionable, but all of them pushed my creativity to higher limits!! ❤️❤️❤️ This one 1️⃣ is definitely a winner. We’ve also decided it’s time for Schindy’s to bottle our Special Sauce. New venture I’ll explore this year!!

Week #37 Nevada

Nevada is the driest state in the nation and home to more mountain ranges than any other U.S. state.

⛰️ Nevada has 314 named mountain ranges and over 300 natural hot springs, both of which are the most of any state in the.

🐴 The state is home to nearly half of the entire wild horse population in the United States.

⛰️🌲 The high mountain peaks shelter Great Basin bristlecone pines, some of which are thousands of years old and rank among the oldest living things on Earth.

Nearly half of Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America, sits in Nevada.

📝 Nevada joined the Union on October 31, 1864, right in the middle of the Civil War. Its massive 175-page state constitution was sent to Washington, D.C. by Morse code because it was too long to mail quickly.

State Route 375 was officially named the Extraterrestrial Highway in 1996 because so many drivers reported seeing UFOs near Area 51.

Nevada has more historic mining ghost towns than actual populated cities and towns.

The concrete used to build the Hoover Dam contains enough material to pave a 16-foot-wide highway stretching from New York City to San Francisco.

Iconic Prime Rib was introduced to Las Vegas casinos in 1942, prime rib became the ultimate cheap or high-roller casino dinner staple across the state. 🥩🎰 So we’re using steak for our topping this week.

We’re putting a twist on our Swiss DeVerney. Mixing our house made white sauce with our new favorite special sauce as the base. Topping it with Swiss cheese, red and green peppers 🫑 sweet and red onions 🧅 mushrooms 🍄‍🟫 steak and fresh pineapple for a surprise sweetness. Drizzled with another house made sauce that’s mixed with our steak sauce.

You’re definitely going to enjoy this one. So many flavors complimenting each other.
