Westerly High School Culinary Arts program prepares students to gain competencies within the food and beverage service industry. Students learn and become proficient in Food Service Safety & Sanitation, Nutrition, Use and Operation of Kitchen Tools and Equipment, Knife Skills, Food Preparation, Dining room Operations, Menu Design/Costing, and with Special Functions. The Students open a public dining room called the “Highland Grille” which gives the students the opportunity to learn in a realistic environment

We’re excited to welcome Chef Melanie Rogers to the Westerly High School Culinary Arts Program and Highland Grille!

Chef Melanie brings more than 15 years of culinary experience and a passion for great food, hospitality, and helping students build confidence in the kitchen. Her career has included fine dining, catering, culinary education, private chef services, and owning and operating her own food truck.

Before joining Westerly High School, Chef Melanie was part of the culinary team at The Vanderbilt in Newport, Rhode Island. Her wide range of professional experience gives her valuable real-world knowledge that she is excited to share with our students.

Chef Melanie studied Culinary Arts and Restaurant Management at Johnson & Wales University and graduated from the Culinary Arts program at Cranston Area Career & Technical Center. She earned first place in the Rhode Island SkillsUSA Culinary Competition and went on to place 14th nationally.

We’re thrilled to have Chef Melanie join our community and look forward to the experience, creativity, and enthusiasm she will bring to our students and the Highland Grille.
