Some of the best Cape Cod stories begin completely by accident.
In 1938, Everett and Gladys Stone purchased the old lighthouse property in West Dennis with plans to develop the land. But by the time their paperwork arrived, the season was already well underway—and there simply wasn’t enough time to begin the work they had planned.
So rather than let the property sit empty, Gladys had an idea: why not open the house to summer guests?
A few rooms became a few more. Meals were served. Travelers arrived, stayed awhile, and discovered something they hadn’t planned on creating. A place everyone wanted to come back to.
And they did.
What began as a way to help cover the mortgage slowly became something much bigger. The development plans were abandoned, the guesthouses stayed, and the Lighthouse Inn was born.
For nearly nine decades, generations of families have arrived here looking for the same things those first guests found in 1938—the ocean breeze, long summer days, dinner by the water, and that feeling that you’ve somehow stumbled upon a place you’ll want to come back to.
Funny how the best Cape Cod traditions sometimes start with a change of plans.
The lighthouse was built to guide ships home.
The Inn, all these years later, has become a place people come back to.
And maybe that was the plan all along. 🤍
