Rare 1472 Edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy Returns to the Market After a Century

A remarkable piece of literary history is set to reappear before the public after more than a century. One of the rarest surviving editions of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, printed in Mantua in 1472, will be offered at auction by Finarte in Rome on June 25.

The volume, produced just two decades after Johannes Gutenberg’s invention of movable type, is considered one of the most important early printings of Dante’s immortal masterpiece. Its return to the antiquarian market is generating considerable excitement among collectors, scholars, and lovers of Italian culture.

The book will be the centerpiece of Finarte’s Books, Autographs, and Prints auction, which features nearly 300 lots ranging from rare manuscripts and historical documents to autographs and bibliographic treasures. For admirers of Dante, whose epic journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise helped shape the Italian language, the auction offers a rare glimpse into the dawn of printing and the enduring legacy of Italy’s greatest poet.
