Let's talk winter plant care.
1. First, determine what type of plant you have. Tropical? Succulent? We can help you find out if you're not sure. Most tropical plants should be watered when the soil feels dry. Some species like peace lilies, ferns, and marantas prefer to be kept moist at all times.
2. In general, we recommend using a decorative planter that you can sit your potted plant inside without having to completely repot the plant.
3. When it’s time to water, allow the plant to sit in an inch of water for to ensure that the roots are fully saturated. Remove any excess water from the bottom of your planter after about an hour or so to prevent root rot.
4. Succulents and cacti are in a dormant period during the winter and may only need to be watered once per month. You can use the same method as described in step 3.
5. Use clean scissors to trim back any yellowed or shriveled leaves. Using your fingers risks damaging the stem of the plant.
6. As long as the plant's new growth is healthy, don't worry! It's natural for every plant to shed old leaves.
7. Use a clean damp cloth to clean off the leaves. This facilitates proper photosynthesis (aka helps each leaf get as much sun as possible).
8. It's not a good idea to repot during the winter, but that doesn't mean you can't spruce things up with a fun new planter.
