We have started something special at Paula’s Runway Café

Three & One Jazz Thursdays!!
Each month we will showcase Live Jazz Performers for the first three Thursdays with a surprise genre of music on the last Thursday of the month. This week we are thrilled to have Laura Evans steaming it up at the Runway Café helping to establish our Thursday Night Jazz Series🎷…Laura will be joined by Hall of Fame bassist Vincent Leggiere and Grammy-nominated percussionist Paul Rossman.
Expect Laura’s signature approach to jazz: familiar tunes, jazz standards, inventive arrangements, expressive vocals, and plenty of room for improvisation. It’s a relaxed night out with great food, drinks, and live music—It’s the beginning of a New Thursday night tradition at the Runway!!

Something you may not have known:

In the 1500's, if you weren't John Burton playing The Guitar Series at Paula’s Runway Café and you were a good lute player, you most likely had a job in the king's court or some other royal or ruler's court, playing during the day and then serenading dinners and bedtimes at night. You couldn't amp up, so you were positioned very closely to the highest ranking individual, and whomever they were talking to. Which gave you access to conversations and information that other people would not have. Which made you the perfect candidate to be a spy. Which was, for a great many lute players in the 1500's a side hustle that paid more than the gig. If you can imagine such a thing.

The lute doubled up almost all of its strings like the modern day 12 string, but smartly left the high string single so one could play melodies. It was not, however, the first instrument to do so. The Arabic Oud, older by a thousand years, also doubled up strings like a 12 string, and was played with a pick that was the width of your hand.

The lute brought about the advent of arpeggio (fingerstyle) guitar, which allowed players to expand beyond a single chord or a single melody and into a more diverse accompaniment.

See John Burton at The Runway Cafe on the Sunday’s he is scheduled! Very much worthwhile!
