an under appreciated holiday movie

I'll give it to John Hughes, he had a way of making you feel stuff.

Dutch, his less-discussed 1991 Thanksgiving road movie, stars Ed O’Neill as the blue-collar everyman stuck on a cross-country road trip with a hoity-toity prep school snob played by Ethan Embry.

Dutch plays it fast and loose in terms of style and substance, like Career Opportunities, it's very much John Hughes trying the 90s on for size - before ultimately slipping into cute kid and cute animal Loafers for the rest of the decade. It skates between slapstick and strained class tension with ease - but it still packs a sentimental wallop when it counts.

Plus it's great to see O’Neill flex something beyond his signature Al Bundy put-upon exhaustion. -Pop
