Happy Mother's Day, Walla Walla!

Greeks have a special bond with their mothers stemming from ancient times. Ancient Greeks honored her as the life-giver centuries before Mother’s Day was celebrated in the West.

Mother Earth (Gaia), wife of Uranus, was the personification of nature that gives birth to everything, and she was worshipped as the ultimate deity.

Her worship then passed to her daughter Rhea, wife and sister of Cronus, who gave birth to several deities in Greek mythology.

Rhea was worshipped as the ‘Mother of Gods’ and ancient Greeks used to celebrate their annual spring festival to honor Rhea, the goddess of nature and fertility.

Christian Greece honored mothers at the feast of Ypapanti (February 2nd), when the Οrthodox Church celebrates the day the Virgin Mary, with Joseph, took the 40-day-old Jesus to the temple to be blessed.

However, in the 1960s, the celebration of Ypapanti lost its popularity, and Greeks started honoring mothers on the second Sunday of May, much like the rest of the West, even though the Church insists on the old day of celebration.

So today, just like we should everyday, give your Mama's kisses, hugs, flowers and love!

This year, May 5th marks the day Greeks celebrate Orthodox Easter!

Greek Easter is also called "Pascha".

When greeting family and friends on Easter day we say "Christos Anesti", which translates into "Christ has risen". As a response, we reply with "Alithos Anesti" which means "Truly, he has risen".

Easter eggs hold a special place in Greek traditions, with the egg symbolizing rebirth and new life. One of the most beloved customs is the egg-cracking game, known as "Tsougrisma." In this lively game, two people each hold a red-dyed egg and take turns tapping the ends against each other. The goal is to crack the other person's egg while keeping your own intact. The last person with an uncracked egg is believed to have good luck for the coming year.

Happy Easter Walla Walla!🐰🐰🐰

Easter continues to be celebrated on two different dates depending on which church you belong to. The Orthodox Easter now falls anywhere between April 4 and May 8 and the Catholic Easter falls anywhere between March 22 and April 25. In rare instances, the dates align, and Easter is celebrated simultaneously.

This year Orthodox Easter falls on Sunday, May 5th. In Greece, Orthodox Christians traditionally eat roasted lamb on a barbecue spit and Tsoureki, a sweet Easter bread.

We hope everyone has a beautiful day, surrounded with family and food❤️

Merry Christmas, Walla Walla! 💚❤️💚 From our big Greek family to all of yours!

Here is a recipe we'd like to share!

Kourambiethes are traditional Greek cookies that are easy to make and great with coffee or tea!

Ingredients

1 cup butter, at room temperature

1 egg yolk

2-3 cups powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 teaspoon brandy, can sub with orange juice

2 cups flour

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350F.

Place butter in bowl and whip until light and fluffy, about 10-15mins.*

Add egg yolk and blend with whipped butter.

Add in 1/4 cup powdered sugar, vanilla, and brandy. Mix well.

Add flour and mix until soft dough is formed. Use more flour as needed.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Break off small pieces of dough, form into a small ball (or whatever size you like).

Pinch the center of the dough ball to flatten a bit and place on baking sheet.

Repeat until all dough it used.

Bake in the oven for 20-25mins, or until bottoms of cookies are golden brown**

While the kourambiethes are baking, cover serving plates with powdered sugar.

Remove kourambiethes from oven and place on cooling rack for 10-15mins.

Place kourambiethes on serving plates.

Sprinkle remaining powdered sugar over them - the more the better!

Enjoy!

Notes

Traditionally, almonds are added to this recipe by placing one within each cookie (rolling the dough around the almond so it's inside the kourambiethes), or chopping them. With many people having nut allergies, we held almonds from the recipe. They are easy to add back in!
*Make sure to really spend the time whipping the butter. This is an important step!!
**The cookies themselves won't turn golden brown.
