Introducing Our First The Verne Store Diner South Knox Student-Athlete of the Week!

We are proud to recognize freshman Warren Shepard as the very first South Knox Student-Athlete of the Week! This honor recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in athletics, academics, leadership, and character—and Warren is a wonderful example of all four.

"Warren Shepard wasn’t even supposed to be on the court for South Knox on Wednesday’s (9/30/26) tennis sectional, he was serving as an injury fill-in that never played a varsity singles match in the regular season. But with the Lincoln Sectional hanging in the balance, the freshman found himself in a pivotal spot and Shepard came through on the big stage and won his match 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 and helped South Knox win the boys tennis sectional. “That’s just absolutely clutch, and he’s just a high-quality kid,” South Knox coach Ryan Hayden said of Shepard. This is why we play, why we practice hard and put in the extra time. Everybody wants that trophy at the end of the season, and these kids did it. I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to coach a kid like Warren. He encourages his teammates with a smile on his face and always gives his best effort whether it is practice or a match. I'm looking forward to the next three seasons of Warren's tennis career."

"Warren is a straight A student in the freshman class. He is a tennis and track athlete and serves on the Student Council as Class Treasurer. Warren is also active in FCA. Outside of SK, Warren works for his family’s business, Shepard Construction, and plays drums in the praise band at Monroe City First Church of God."

Help Us Uncover a Piece of Local History!

Here at the Verne Store Diner, we’re interested in learning more about an old local group known as the Verne Society.

From what we understand, it was a men’s club made up of local farmers and business owners. They gathered regularly for fellowship and a good time, but they also joined their resources together to help neighbors and families in need throughout Knox County.

The newspaper page pictured is from the Sun-Commercial in December 2010 and shows the Verne Society’s annual Christmas party held right here at the Verne Store.

Did your father, grandfather, or another relative belong to the Verne Society? Do you recognize anyone pictured? We would love to hear from you!
We’re looking for members’ names, photographs, stories, meeting places, newspaper clippings, membership cards, records, or anything else connected to the Society. Even the smallest memory could help us preserve this special piece of Knox County history.
