Das erste Oktoberfest at Alpen Haus! 🍺🥨

This is our very first Oktoberfest, and we couldn't celebrate something like that for just one weekend. So we went ahead and made it an entire month!

Live German bands, DJ nights, stein hoisting competitions with the Munich breweries themselves, dirndl and lederhosen contests, Marzen, and Festbier by the .5L or das Boot.

From the kitchen, down the line, to your table 👩🏼‍🍳

Leberkäse seared golden. A Wurstplatte stacked with the classics. Schnitzel pounded out and fried to order. And a Schweinshaxe with crackling that does its own talking.

Turn the sound on and let the music do the rest.

Last Tuesday the derecho came through Valpo with 100+ mph winds. It knocked out our power for 22 hours and forced us to close for the first time since we opened the doors.

Wednesday the lights came back on. Our deliveries did not. We opened anyway, short on product, because three weeks into a dream you don’t get to have an off week.

Then Saturday happened. Saturday we welcomed more people through our doors than any day since we opened. We sold out of pretzels again, which we are genuinely sorry about and working on.

Here is the part that matters. Tatjana and I weren’t there.

We got married on Saturday. While we were saying our vows a few miles away, our team took care of the busiest day this place has ever had without either of us in the room. Front of house and back of house, they did not just hold it together. They made it look easy.

You hire people and you hope. Then a week like this one comes along and shows you exactly what you have. Our team has already become family to us.

Thank you, Valpo, for showing up in a week when we had every excuse and no power. And thank you to our staff, who deserve every bit of the credit for this one.

⚡ WE'RE BACK! OPEN TONIGHT AT 4PM

Power is back on at Alpen Haus and we're opening our doors at 4pm!

After the storms, we'll be running a limited menu with limited staff tonight. Thanks in advance for your patience and understanding!

🍽️ Lots of cancelations today so we will be doing walk ins, but you can make reservations online!
🍺 The bar is WALK-IN ONLY, first come, first served
📞 Our phones are barely working, so please don't worry if you can't reach us. Just come on in.

Northwest Indiana... we knew you would show up. We did not know you would show up like THAT‼️

Our first weekend was beyond anything we pictured. Every reservation booked, a full bar every night, and a room that did not stop buzzing from the moment we opened the doors. We went through more German bier, schnitzel, and pretzels in four days than we had planned for in two weeks.

So we used Monday to restock top to bottom, and we are back at it and ready for you.

One change this week: we are serving dinner only Tuesday through Friday so our kitchen has the prep time to keep the food coming out exactly the way it did opening weekend. The weekend is on as planned, full days both Saturday and Sunday.

Week of August 4 through 9:
Tue to Fri: 4pm to 10pm, dinner only
Sat: 11am to 11pm
Sun: 11am to 8pm

And Grand Opening Weekend Two is on. The German Band plays Saturday, August 8th from 5 to 8pm, and they are back again on the 22nd.

Two nights of practice. One more sleep.

We ran full service Tuesday and Wednesday with a room full of family, friends, and neighbors so our team could work out every last detail before we open for real. It went better than we could have hoped.

Tomorrow at 4pm we open the doors to everyone. Ed Wagner's Brass Band plays 5 to 8pm 🪊

Heads up that Friday evening is nearly full already. Saturday and Sunday still have great times open, and honestly they may be the better first visit. The brass band is back Sunday 12 to 3pm.

Walk-ins are always welcome but we are completely booked for reservations besides the bar. We’ve also had questions about our menu. We’ll have it for you at the grand opening 😁
