One thing that surprises them is how long it takes from start to finish once they decide to start the process. Especially if they have a large home filled with a lifetime of stuff. If you're thinking of moving anytime in the next few years, start downsizing now. Have family go through and take heirlooms that they are fond of. Sort out decorations that you don't use and donate them. Take an honest look around the house at what really makes you happy and get the excess out of the way. Have rummage sales with other people. I've been a caregiver. I work with caregivers. I know many caregivers. And I always stress the importance of planning for the unexpected. When my mom got sick and passed suddenly, we didn't have a plan for Dad. We scrambled and made things work. Luckily, I have over 20 years of experience in this field. Some families are starting this process blind. Knowing where to start is overwhelming. So my advice is to start looking at options early. Think about the "what ifs" and have some ideas in mind.
Another piece of advice I will give is to start attending community educational events. Check around you and learn what you can about topics related to caregiving and taking care of finances, legal matters, housing, Medicare, and other things that may help you on your path of taking care of a senior loved one. Most people don't like to plan ahead for uncomfortable topics. I know families that don't have any end of life plans or even the slightest comfort in talking about the subject. But it is necessary. I hear "If I talk about it, then it's going to happen" line frequently. Then I counter with "Well, let's have you pick the lottery numbers and see if your theory is true."
Planning for what you want is a gift to your family. And I'm not talking about every detail. But at least have the talk with your family about your comfort level with Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing, moving to a senior apartment complex, hiring in-home care, what about if someone has a major medical episode?
