Seven Cups

Seven Cups We are a traditional Chinese teahouse named by Travel & Leisure "One Of Six Best Places to Drink Tea in America."
(463)

Seven Cups specializes in sourcing the freshest teas directly from tea makers across China. Our teahouse menu features over 70 high-quality loose-leaf Chinese teas and a small selection of snacks for you to enjoy as you drink your tea. Our teas have given us international recognition, but we remain a neighborhood destination, a quiet spot to spend hours with our great selection of teas.

Does anyone else think poppies smell like green tea?

Like Mengding Ganlu green tea, right now, when it’s fresh from harvest?

If you’d like a side-by-side comparison, four new 2026 green teas are waiting for you inside the tea house and the poppies are just outside (but they wait for no one).

If you stop by the teahouse this weekend you’ll see Jodie and Mike, giving the dragon and monsoon clouds a bath, a few touch-ups, and a fresh protective coat.

Their work to create this mural three years ago made it into one of the things that defines our teahouse. They’re also such wonderful people to work with that we’re thrilled to have them back to help preserve the mural’s colors for years to come.

From design to ex*****on to conservation, we can’t recommend enough.

A snapshot found on Austin’s desk, taken before Seven Cups was even Seven Cups.

This photo goes all the way back to the first time Austin ever stepped foot into a tea garden, twenty-five years ago, when he hiked up into the Wudong Mountain range on a stock trail and camped among the tea bushes there with this tea maker (name unknown) as his host.

There was no driving up the mountain back then, although the local government was actively working on a road at the time. Rock-clearing dynamite blasts echoed through the night as the tea maker poured gongfucha brews of dancong and made Austin some farm fresh chicken soup on the mountainside, as advertised by his sign in the photo. Talk about entrepreneurial spirit.

That was a year before Seven Cups started up, when Austin was still figuring things out. He wasn’t in the tea business. He didn’t know he even wanted to be in the tea business. He was just a guy who loved tea and China was opening to the world. Beijing just got chosen for the 2008 Olympics and China soon entered the WTO. There was a sense of optimism and awe in the country, among Chinese and outsiders alike.

Drinking 2025’s Sweet Potato Dan Cong invokes these memories for Austin. It reminds him of both the flavor of the tea he drank that night on Wudong Mountain and the feeling of promise it came steeped in.

ALL Green and Wulong teas are 20% off through Monday, December 1st.

Whether you need a toasty wulong companion for the cold weather or you dwell in the land of eternal spring with green tea in your cup all year round, the goods are waiting for you in our biggest sale of the holiday season.

Tea quality wise, it’s been an awesome year for both Chinese green and wulong and we feel impossibly lucky to still be here, drinking them with you all. Our gratitude goes to you––the community that supports these teas and sustains a tiny business like ours.

Thank you, as always. Wishing you a happy holiday weekend with lots of great tea.

Community Food Bank Benefit Event: Tea in the Garden, Raffle & Food Drive

Join us in Seven Cups teahouse’s beautifully landscaped backyard garden for the first time ever this Saturday, Nov. 15th, 6pm - 8pm.

You can enjoy a cool evening and a cup of tea among the sotol, saguaro, and ocotillo to support the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona. Generosity and compassion are the true spirit of a Chinese teahouse, so join us in helping local efforts to meet current increased needs.

There will be a raffle for tea lovers, too. Prizes include decades-old puer cakes, full sets of teaware, bundles of tea, and good old Seven Cups gift cards.

A $10 suggested donation for admission can be paid in advance on Eventbrite or in person at the event. Admission includes complimentary tea service and a raffle ticket. Additional raffle tickets are available at the event for $5 each or six tickets for $25.

All ticket sales and donations (except the Eventbrite fee) go to the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.

Non-perishable food donations to the food bank can also be made at the event or at the teahouse register from now through Sunday, 11/16. Packages of food must be fully labeled, intact and unopened. (Sorry, glass jars can’t be accepted due to breakage.)

When tea bushes (and Austin) are left to their own devices, they can really go off. These are 9ft tall shrubs of Fuding Da Bai, the great commercial tea cultivar of Fujian. Heavily planted since the 1980s, they’re the stalwart beauties behind Silver Needle and Bai Mudan white teas and also so many green teas throughout China. Here they are in the cool hills of Shaowu prefecture, about an hour’s drive south of Wuyishan. The garden manager originally planted them here as an experiment, but they’ve since grown up to be ornamental giants.

The 19th century painter Paul Cézanne said some wild stuff about fruits and vegetables.

If you ask us, he could have just as easily been talking about some leaves of sheng puer when he declared:

“[They] like having their portrait painted…their thought is given off with their perfumes. They come with all their scents, they speak of the fields they have left, the rain which has nourished them, the daybreaks they have seen.”

Cézanne, I doubt you ever got the chance to taste a pot of sheng, but if you had, I’m sure you’d be right there with us, gushing about the way sheng’s bare-bones processing lets the tea leaves paint their own picture, each batch a landscape of their home.
