The family run Old Hickory House restaurants have been an Atlanta institution for more than 60 years with 4 family members operating their stores in Atlanta before closing and retiring. The old Forrest Park location was the one who had a scene in the movie “Smokey & The Bandit” filmed in 1977. This scene at the Old Hickory House had Jackie Gleason and Burt Reynolds in it. Gleason ordered a Diablo sandwich which we now serve at our location in Tucker, Georgia. Elvis Presley was another celebrity among other’s who frequented the Old Hickory House’s in the Atlanta area. The Tucker location that opened in 1974 is the only Old Hickory House standing. Come join us and “Put Some South In Your Mouth!”

Brunswick stew in Georgia doesn’t get much better than at the Old Hickory House in Tucker, where smoky barbecue and old-school Southern sides have kept people coming back for decades. The restaurant has deep roots in the Atlanta area, with family recipes and barbecue traditions that have been passed down for generations. The Tucker restaurant opened in 1974 and is now the last Old Hickory House location still operating. The meat is slow-roasted over real hickory logs, giving the pork, ribs, beef, and chicken plenty of smoke before they hit the plate. The Brunswick stew is a must, especially alongside chopped pork, slaw, beans, or squash casserole. You can also stop in for a country breakfast with biscuits, pancakes, eggs, and other morning favorites. Save room for dessert, because the banana pudding and fruit cobblers are made in-house. It’s a simple, longtime Atlanta-area barbecue stop built around big plates, family recipes, and real hickory smoke.

When you need yourself a Diablo sandwich, a Dr. Pepper, and you need it quick because, well, you're in a bit of a hurry, you have to head over to the Old Hickory House (Tucker, Georgia).

The only remaining location of a once thriving local chain, the Tucker location is still thriving with wood paneling on the walls, a bar with formica laminate topping, and some great sweet tea. The place is like a tried and true time machine, straight out of 1977, when there was a chase going on, and not for something as low-key as bank robbin' neither, but for much more serious stakes. There was no time for hushpuppies, after all...

While the scene in "Smokey and the Bandit" was filmed up the road at a location in Forwst Park, Georgia, the spirit is still alive and well in Tucker, complete with a few posters on the wall in the back, tucked away to almost where you wouldn't even notice. It's places like this where the heart of America still exists, as almost everyone on staff gathers around the television thirty minutes before close to catch the first quarter of the Georgia Tech game.

So, thank ya, nice lady, for letting me quiz you about how often people come in and bring up the best film ever made (pretty often, a good sign for the health of America, I've found that knowledge of "Smokey and the Bandit" is a good barometer) and thanks to everyone at the at Old Hickory House for treating us to a dinner straight out of the 1970's.
