Okay, summer begins on Summer Solstice. Our world doesn't follow any of a number of human made calendars. Solstice, longest day of the year -> Summer!

“It’s still spring! The Summer Solstice hasn’t happened yet.”

That One Guy

When does summer start? When school is out? When the monsoons begin? When it becomes questionably safe to hike after 11 am?

If you ask an astronomer, it would be the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year.

Ancestral Puebloans built many solar calendars throughout the Colorado Plateau. These petroglyphs were built at specific angles to capture sunlight during solstices, equinoxes, and cross-quarter days.

A solar calendar can be seen in Puerco Pueblo in Petrified Forest National Park. The sun shines through a crack in a boulder, illuminating a spiral-shaped petroglyph.

This effect lasts for about two weeks around the summer Solstice. It is strongest around 9 am on June 21. Join the rangers at Puerco Pueblo to witness this spectacular event and rejoice as That One Guy must admit summer has started.
