On June 15th, a group of 11 flea-covered puppies was found on a Topeka trail. Having nowhere else to go, they came to HHHS for TLC and a fresh start.
Hundreds of animals enter Helping Hands Humane Society in a typical summer month, especially as the 4th of July draws nearer and storms and fireworks scare dogs who then run away from home.
It’s also puppy and kitten season, meaning that pet populations grow when unfixed dogs and cats have litters. These 11 puppies are a prime example. Fleas were making a meal of these defenseless babies; they’ve now been vaccinated, treated for fleas, given flea/tick/heartworm prevention, dewormed, and have been/will be spayed/neutered and microchipped so they can go up for adoption and find loving families!
As you can imagine, that level of medical support adds up. Sterilization surgeries, vaccines, and other treatments cost approximately $172 for each puppy. Basic care for one pet for one day at HHHS is $15. 4 of the boys have been adopted; we estimate total cost invested in this group so far is $3,497. That is just for ONE group of puppies who’ve entered our shelter recently!
