Always start with the Red (Positive) cable. Connect it to the dead terminal first, then to the donor battery. This sequence minimizes the risk of a short circuit if a live clamp accidentally touches the car frame.

When it's time for the Black (Negative) cable on the dead car, avoid the negative battery post. Instead, attach it to a solid, unpainted metal part of the engine block. This keeps any potential sparks away from the battery, where flammable hydrogen gas might be present.
