🐢 Did you know that Florida is home to five different species of sea turtles that nest on its beaches? Below are a few facts about each.
️⃣ Loggerhead sea turtles are known for their orange to brown coloration and a broad head that allows them to crush their favorite ocean snacks. Adults are carnivores and their diet consists mainly of hard-shelled prey such as crabs, clams, and other crustaceans. Their powerful jaws are adapted for crushing and grinding these tough shells, and they can consume up to 200 pounds of food per year.
️⃣ Green sea turtles are the only herbivorous sea turtle species and play an important role in maintaining the health of seagrass beds, which provide habitat for many other marine species. The name "green sea turtle" was given to this species thanks to the green coloration of the body fat, rather than the shell color.
️⃣ Leatherback sea turtles are the largest of all sea turtle species and can weigh up to 2,000 pounds. They have unique adaptations such as a flexible, leathery shell and the ability to regulate their body temperature, which allows them to thrive in a wide range of ocean environments.
️⃣ Hawksbill sea turtles are named for their distinctive hooked beak, which they use to feed on sponges and other invertebrates. Their beautiful shells are mesmerizing, and helps them to camouflage into the reef habitat so they can forage in peace.
️⃣ Kemp's ridley sea turtles are the smallest of all sea turtle species and are known for their synchronized nesting behavior, called an arribada, where hundreds of females may come ashore to lay their eggs at the same time. Florida is not the site of this arribada behavior, but a handful of turtles still come ashore to nest on the barrier islands. As the most endangered sea turtle species in the world, this makes conservation efforts to protect their nesting habitat even more crucial.
