It just got harder to rise and grind.

Coffee prices in the US rose nearly 21% last month, compared to the previous year. That’s the biggest annual jump since 1997. Month over month, prices spiked 3.6%.

Those steep prices have a lot to do with tariffs. According to the National Coffee Association, the US imports 99% of its coffee, and a lot of that comes from countries that face the highest tariffs, like Brazil, Colombia, and Vietnam.

It’s not just tariffs, though. Tough weather conditions in bean-growing areas have also contributed to higher prices.

Price increases have already been dripping down to the consumer. J.M. Smucker, which owns Folgers and Café Bustelo, has raised coffee prices twice this year. Last month, the company said it would probably do so again this winter, CNN reported.

Starbucks has held off on any increases for now, promising earlier this summer that it wouldn’t change prices until the end of its fiscal year, which wraps up at the end of this month.
