The Balvenie was founded in 1892 by William grant in Dufftown, Scotland, using stones from a nearby manor house. It remains one of the few family-owned distilleries in Speyside and is famous for its “Five Rare Crafts”, including traditional floor maltings and an on-site cooperage. In the 1980’s, it revolutionized the industry when Malt Master David Stewart pioneered “casi finishing” - the process of aging whisky in one barrel and finishing it in another.

Fun facts!
The ghostly manger: Legend says the “Green Lady” ghost haunts the maltings. She is the ghost of the former mistress of the nearby castle. Some believe she followed the stones from the ruined castle when they were used to build the distillery’s warehouse.

Monkey shoulder: In the past, workers who manually turned barley on the floor maltings often developed a repetitive strain injury that would cause one arm to hang low like a monkey, leading to the nickname “monkey shoulder”, now the name of a famous blended malt that uses Balvenie whiskey.

Balvenie in Gaelic means “village of luck”!

It’s a classic American survival story starting in a humble general store, surging prohibition, and evolving from a St. Louis handshake into an award-winning wheated bourbon that’s still kicking today.
