The black community took on City Hall and won! APEDF finally got a permit in hand to open the Uhuru Bakery & Cafe! There is overwhelming support in and around North St. Louis the for a black community owned healthy restaurant which will provide employment and training and a positive African style cultural gathering place in our community! In the College Hill black community around the Uhuru Bakery site, almost 400 properties, over 60% of the original structures are vacant and abandoned!
College Hill is known as a "food desert", there is no access to healthy food without traveling over a mile to a white neighborhood to go to a grocery store or restaurant! At least 25% of College Hill residents do not have access to a vehicle.
Support the Black Power Blueprint projects that are growing right now in North St. Louis to bring healthy affordable food, housing, health care and employment to our community!

UHURU BAKERY & CAFE WINS the right to open!
On Feb, 12, Uhuru Bakery & over 100 supporters went to the St. Louis Board of Adjustment to appeal a denial for a permit to renovate Uhuru Bakery & Cafe. After 4 hours of community testimony and debate, the Board voted to grant the permit.
The hearing, held via Zoom, was attended by 116 people, 100 of them supporters of Uhuru Bakery. 25 spoke in favor along with the group’s attorney, Dan Emerson. Letters of support were submitted by three elected officials from the area of the new restaurant.
Ward 14 Alderman Rasheen Aldridge wrote: “This property has historically been a restaurant. It is on the West Florissant corridor where there are no options for healthy prepared food. … Our community can come together over pastries, lunch or coffee.”
The APEDF also brought a letter of support from the Northside Independent Neighborhood Association (NINA), whose President, Christopher Gladney, addressed the need for quality food in an area known as a “food desert” and declared that "The goal of NINA is to bring together College Hill and neighboring North Side communities to build unity for prosperity, commerce, neighborhood collaboration and revitalization.”
Members of the Board of Adjustment saw the broad community support and verified that more than 90 petition signatures were, submitted from College Hill residents.
Asked about the next step for the project, APEDF President Ona Zene Yesh*tela replied, “Now we can go forward to secure the building permits and begin the renovations, providing needed employment in our community. Our local contractors have been on standby and are ready to go. We’re grateful for all our supporters! We will continue to fight for all the Northside businesses to get fairly treated by the City. We look forward to welcoming everyone to the new Uhuru Bakery and Cafe!”

Moving forward: Come to a community rally-- every Sunday at Uhuru House 3-5pm CT at 4101 W. Florissant Ave. St. Louis more info 314-380-8016 or tune in live at www.youtube.com/theburningspeartv
