This stands for every small business in every community! ❤️”every visit matters. Every order matters”
I want to speak from a place of honesty today.
Supporting local small businesses matters more than people realize, especially during slower times like this. From the outside looking in, it can seem like everything is fine. Open doors, lights on, food going out. What people don’t always see is the inside looking out. The days when no one walks through the door. The quiet hours where it feels like you’re invisible, wondering if anyone still believes in what you’re building.
This isn’t just about Mad Hatter Cafe. This is about every small business in Salisbury, MD. Every owner who opens their doors daily with hope, passion, and responsibility. I drive past chain restaurants every single day and see them packed wall to wall. And it makes me wonder why. We buy from many of the same vendors. Most of us make a real effort to support each other locally. We sponsor events. We donate food. We show up for this community again and again.
So the question isn’t asked out of anger, but out of curiosity and care. Why do people choose chains over the small businesses that live here, grow here, and reinvest here?
In the five and a half years we’ve been open, I’ve never asked for help. I’ve never even considered writing something like this. But the truth is, small businesses need support to survive. Not just during the good times, but especially during the quiet ones.
At the end of the day, community means sticking together. It means choosing each other when you can. There are days, like today, where it feels lonely being on this side of the counter. And I know I’m not the only one feeling it.
If you’ve ever loved a local spot, enjoyed a meal, had a conversation with an owner, or felt welcomed somewhere small and familiar, please remember that choice matters. Every visit matters. Every order matters.
This community is strong when we support one another. And we’re still here, still showing up, still believing in Salisbury. We just hope Salisbury believes in us too.
