⛽️ Perched at the highest elevation bar in Massachusetts, the unique history of Liston’s Bar & Restaurant in Worthington is as interesting as their menu. What was once a gas station with a bar and four stools that originally opened in 1933, has evolved into a gathering place for locals and is a pleasant weekend drive destination for out-of-towners looking to enjoy great food. Liston’s has been known to attract snowmobiles in the winter and motorcycles in the summer as a popular spot to stop while on a scenic drive through the hilltowns.

Whether it’s on the patio or inside, you will encounter many friends meeting up at Liston’s, as well as families relaxing and enjoying a meal together. You will even sometimes find live outdoor music and an outdoor bar area open during the summer.

We took advantage of the Saturday prime rib special for $45. This spectacular slab of meat, served with a side of au jus, was so big that I enjoyed it at home for two more meals. Served with mashed skin-on potatoes, a buttery side of green beans with a hint of garlic, and a dinner roll, we enjoyed the feast set out before us. We wet our palates with a lemon drop martini and a Berkshire Brewery Steel Rail.

Our server was attentive and friendly, and the bustling atmosphere felt lively. There were several TVs along the walls and a moose head watching over the dining space. With a welcoming atmosphere, great service, and a hearty prime rib I am still fondly remembering, The Three Forks Review awards 3 forks to Liston’s Bar & Restaurant.

🍗 Zack’s BBQ in Deerfield, Mass., is a Texas-style barbecue restaurant that greets you with the delicious aroma of meat smokers as soon as you get out of your car. Two giant smokers are working hard outside the casual roadside restaurant, which offers both indoor and outdoor seating.

Right off the bat, the staff were welcoming and happy to answer any menu questions. Zack's is counter-service dining, and the food was delivered to our table. The menu offers a variety of house-smoked meats, sandwiches, burgers, and plenty of sides.

We went with one of the Fill Up Meals featuring three meats and two sides, along with coleslaw and cornbread. The smoked brisket had nice crispy edges and was enhanced by the variety of barbecue sauces available. The pork belly BBQ burnt ends came saucy and offered a different twist compared to the brisket-style burnt ends we've tried before, with a tender bite that practically melted in your mouth.

The ribs were large and meaty and especially enjoyable with the Carolina BBQ sauce, though we would have liked them served a bit hotter. Be sure to sample the variety of sauces, including Sweet BBQ, Lil' Heat, Alabama, and Carolina Gold.

The candied baked beans had a pleasant hint of maple, and the French fries were a satisfying accompaniment to the meal. Topping everything off was a Key Lime cake with a lightly tart filling and frosting that provided a refreshing finish.

Western Massachusetts has a handful of barbecue restaurants, and we enjoyed our visit to Zack's BBQ. The welcoming atmosphere, and variety of sauces made for an enjoyable dining experience. We are awarding Zack's BBQ 2 forks.

The Summer Scoop with The Three Forks Review

🐟 MB'S Tastes of the Sea in Three Rivers, Mass., is a popular family-owned and operated seafood restaurant known for its fresh seafood and generous portions.

Once we enter the summer season in New England, my tastes seem to shift toward requiring a seafood meal on a weekly basis. Two things I seem to have a bottomless appetite for are lobster and steamers. So, once I saw MB’s was offering all-you-can-eat steamers for $29.99 on the day we visited, I knew I was in the right spot. Add in an amazing side salad, and my ideal meal was created. The steamers were cooked to perfection—not chewy or sandy. Three plates of steamers later, I finally hit my full line.

A nice bowl of homemade chips was served once we were seated. Our server was very attentive and checked on us multiple times. The fish and chips were also very good, featuring two large pieces of flavorful, flaky fish along with a heaping portion of fries and coleslaw. MB’s is a bustling dining spot, which I think is a good sign of a well-loved restaurant, even if it adds to a lengthier dining experience.

Overall, it was a good time and a good meal, resulting in a 2.5-fork rating.

🍽️ Some may consider themselves experts in various areas of culinary delights. Others can proudly hold the title of sommelier due to their extensive knowledge of wine. As for me, I’d like to think I have some self-appointed expertise when it comes to quesadillas and French fries. As a teenage server at Friendly’s, I honed my appreciation with my preferred break meal: a chicken quesadilla and a chocolate Fribble. Fast forward a few decades, and quesadillas remain the perfect menu item—equally suited as an appetizer or an entrée.

Ebenezer's Bar & Grill in South Hadley, Massachusetts, appears at first glance to be a casual neighborhood bar, but step inside and you'll find a spacious dining area with a mix of tables and high-top seating. The kitchen stays open until 10 p.m., and all menu items are available for takeout as well.

Ebenezer’s excels in the quesadilla game, serving grilled flour tortillas packed with shredded Jack cheese. Whether you choose the Buffalo Chicken Quesadilla, stuffed with Gorgonzola and buffalo chicken, or the Chicken Bacon Ranch Quesadilla, you’ll be enjoying some of the best quesadillas we’ve tasted. The basket of crinkle cut fries at Ebenezer’s is top-notch as well—always crispy, always hot, and tossed in a special spice blend that keeps you reaching for more.

The Cheeseburger Club is a traditional triple-decker sandwich layered with bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. It’s enjoyable, filling, and made exactly the way a club sandwich should be.

Ebenezer’s is well worth a visit for its great food, casual atmosphere, and, in our humble opinion, the best fries and quesadillas around. After several visits, the quality and consistency continue to impress. The Three Forks Review awards 2.5 forks to Ebenezer’s

🐟 Nothing kicks off the summer season in New England quite like a seafood dinner. While we love a good meal with ocean views, luckily there are many great inland spots that offer enjoyable seafood when the coast is just a little too far away.

Fishtales Bar & Grill offers “small hometown cooking in the heart of Hatfield.” While the menu includes sandwiches, burgers, and salads, the seafood is the star and is delivered fresh daily. (On a side note, they also offer an excellent prime rib dinner on Sundays and Wednesdays for $21.99 — quite a deal!)

Fishtales is a popular local spot to enjoy drinks, good food, and conversation, and it was hopping on the day we visited. With its casual and comfortable atmosphere, it’s an easy place to settle in for an enjoyable dining experience.

To me, it’s officially summer once I’ve had steamed lobster. What’s better than one delicious lobster dipped in warm melted butter? Twin lobsters! 🦞 Once my metal bucket for the shells arrived — along with the wet towelette and crackers — my summer mode was officially activated. I added a side salad and the daily vegetable, creating a meal I can honestly say I loved.

My dining partner ordered the fried scallops, which arrived as a huge portion of large scallops alongside french fries and creamy coleslaw. They were so good that he said he would definitely order the scallops again.

Our server promptly made sure all of our dining needs were met, which we appreciated. For fresh seafood served in a relaxed and welcoming setting, the Three Forks Review awards Fishtales Bar & Grill 2.5 forks.
