If chicken is grown from animal cells in a controlled system instead of coming from a conventionally raised and slaughtered bird, consumers should be able to tell the difference before they buy it.

That’s not an argument about whether cell-cultivated chicken is “good” or “bad.” It’s about knowing what you’re paying for.

The U.S. already has cell-cultivated chicken in its regulatory system. UPSIDE Foods and GOOD Meat were among the first companies to clear federal reviews, and USDA says labels for cell-cultured meat and poultry must be submitted for specific approval before those products enter commerce. The labels also cannot be false or misleading.

And the wording matters more than it may seem.

A study involving 2,653 U.S. consumers tested different names for these products. More than 80% correctly understood terms such as “cell-cultivated” and “cell-cultured.” But when the word “cell” disappeared and people saw only “cultivated” or “cultured,” correct understanding fell to roughly 33%–62%, depending on the product. A simple description explaining that the food was grown from animal cells pushed understanding above 95%.

That tells us something important: clearer labels aren’t a minor technical detail. They can determine whether someone actually understands what is sitting in front of them.

Cell-cultivated chicken is still chicken-derived food, not a plant-based imitation, and federal regulators oversee it as a poultry food product. But the production method is fundamentally different from conventional chicken production.

People don’t need that difference hidden behind the most marketable wording possible. They need plain language that tells them what the product is and how it was made.

Then let them decide for themselves.
