For years, small coffee farmers in the La Botija Mountains have faced limited options when it comes time to sell their harvest. Without their own processing equipment, many have been forced to sell freshly picked coffee cherries at steep discounts.

This summer, we took a big step toward changing that.

Three wet mills and drying patios were built on the farms of longtime San Lázaro producers, giving them the ability to process and dry their own coffee right where it’s grown. Four Mission Lazarus church teams from the U.S. worked alongside these families to build each patio from the ground up.

But these patios are more than new infrastructure. They give small farmers greater opportunity, independence, and ownership over the coffee they work hard to grow.
