A Cleveland Tradition with a History All Its Own
When fall arrives in Northeast Ohio, there are a few things you can count on: cooler temperatures, changing leaves, footballโฆand clambakes!
But have you ever wondered how a seafood feast became such a beloved tradition in a city hundreds of miles from the Atlantic Ocean?
The Cleveland-style clambake has roots stretching back more than a century. Inspired by the traditional coastal clambakes of New England, the custom took on a distinctly Northeast Ohio personality as Clevelandโs growing rail network and bustling food markets made it possible to bring fresh clams from the East Coast to the region.
Over time, Clevelanders made the tradition their own. The classic local clambake evolved into a hearty fall feast featuring clams, chicken, corn on the cob, potatoes and other favoritesโoften enjoyed outdoors with family, friends and neighbors.
By the mid-20th century, clambakes had become a fixture of autumn life throughout Greater Cleveland. Churches, neighborhood groups, clubs, restaurants and families gathered around steaming pots of clams and all the fixings. What began as a coastal tradition became something uniquely Cleveland: part meal, part celebration and, most importantly, a reason to bring people together.
That spirit of community makes the clambake a perfect tradition for supporting Little Mountain Animal Sanctuary.
This October, The Butcherโs Pantry and Little Mountain Animal Sanctuary are putting a charitable twist on this Cleveland fall favorite. Come enjoy good food, live music and a great time while helping support the animals who call Little Mountain home.
