On This Day in 1977, ELO Released Out of the Blue
On October 3, 1977, Electric Light Orchestra released Out of the Blue, the spectacular double album that captured Jeff Lynne’s vision at its most ambitious.
Written and produced entirely by Lynne, the album combined rock guitars, strings, layered vocals, keyboards and elaborate studio production on a scale few bands were attempting. “Turn to Stone,” “Sweet Talkin’ Woman” and “Wild West Hero” became enduring ELO favorites, while “Mr. Blue Sky” grew into one of the most recognizable songs of their entire career.
At the heart of the double album was the four-song “Concerto for a Rainy Day,” culminating in “Mr. Blue Sky.” Despite the dense arrangements, Lynne’s melodic instincts kept the music immediate and memorable.
Out of the Blue became one of ELO’s defining records and a showcase for a band capable of combining progressive ambition, pop songwriting and rock musicianship within the same extraordinary album.
