On This Day in 1991, Pearl Jam Released Ten

On August 27, 1991, Pearl Jam released Ten, their debut studio album and the beginning of one of the most important careers to emerge from the Seattle rock scene.

The band had formed only months earlier around guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready, bassist Jeff Ament, drummer Dave Krusen, and vocalist Eddie Vedder. Gossard and Ament had previously played together in Green River and Mother Love Bone, while Vedder joined after writing lyrics and recording vocals over instrumental demos sent to him in California.

Ten delivered an extraordinary opening statement: “Once,” “Even Flow,” “Alive,” “Why Go,” “Black,” “Jeremy,” “Oceans,” “Porch,” and “Release.” Gossard’s massive riffs and McCready’s fiery lead guitar work combined with Vedder’s deeply emotional vocals to create a sound that was immediately recognizable.

Success came gradually rather than overnight, but Ten eventually reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and became one of the defining rock albums of the 1990s. More than three decades later, “Alive,” “Even Flow,” “Jeremy,” and “Black” remain essential Pearl Jam songs.
