Hello friends

I want to share something personal with you today.
I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and I am getting ready for surgery.
Thankfully, my cancer was discovered through medical screening, and the scans showed no evidence that it had spread. For that I am very grateful.
So ladies, please don’t postpone your mammograms and recommended screening. Early detection can make a tremendous difference!

I will be away from the restaurant for a few weeks while I recover.
My wonderful staff will continue cooking and taking care of you. But if they run out of something, please be patient and understanding.

I also won’t be able to answer emails or posts for a while.

I am in good hands, surrounded by wonderful people, and staying positive.

I still have a lot of cooking, gardening, traveling, and DANCING 💃.

I bet most of you have never heard of SHANKLEESH, unless you grew up in Syria or Lebanon.

It’s one of those foods that proves our ancestors were pretty clever: turning yogurt into a cheese that could be dried, aged in order to keep for years.

And yes….shankleesh has a personality. You either love it or hate it. 😀The smell can be strong, but the flavor is wonderful especially with tomatoes, mint and olive oil.

Some foods you love before you even taste them because they carry the smell and memories of home. ❤️

Some memories come back with just a smell.

The smell of bread on the tanoor takes me straight back to my grandmother’s fresh bread, zaatar, makdous and a kitchen filled with a smell I wish I could bottle.

In the old days in our Syrian village, each part of the village had a tanoor, and families would take turns coming to bake their bread. It wasn’t just about making bread. It was part of village life, women sharing stories, kids waiting for the fresh bread and men getting the woods.

To this day, I don’t think there is better bread in the world. 🥖❤️👵

My amazing staff knows exactly what to do when business slows down. They clean, scrub, and make everything sparkle. ✨

And me? I get the WORST job of all….PAPERWORK 📝😭
