The Joneses cooked in Goldsboro this weekend supporting the Boys and Girls Club of the Coastal Plain today. We managed to come away with a third place call via a tiebreaker for 2nd place. It was a great event with a field of top cooks. Congrats to those who heard their names called.

An hour and a half before judging the pig was not at all where I wanted it to be. But in pig cooking, like life, no matter what it looks like just keep cooking.

We had a great end to our cook season today with a 1st place call at Chocowinity Fire Department! Congrats to Billy John Narron on second and Mark Woolard on third.

Chocowinity takes great care of the cooks at this event each year. We stay well fed with a low country boil on Friday night and a full breakfast early Saturday morning.

I also had a great teammate this week who was a huge help.

We competed in the fundraising competition for Cherryanne’s Wish this weekend. This has become one of my favorite events. Cherryanne is part of a great family and she has a touching story. They organize this event to raise money for the Shriners Children’s hospital in SC.

When the scores were settled we came it 5th out of 20 top cooks. We scored (I think) the second highest score we’ve received. Congrats to all the winners!

The A team was hard at work today. A big thank you to Sandy Run Baptist Church for having us provide their Homecoming celebration lunch today. Barbecue, green beans, barbecue potatoes, and slaw were on the menu.

This weekend we cooked in a competition in Bath to raise funds for the Children’s Hospital. When the scores settled we came in 7th. Overall i was happy with the pig today. This pig had more moisture than any pig I’ve ever cooked. It might not have been a winner but the quality control samples I had were some fine eating.

Barbecue is being sold at Southern Acres on highway 92 in Bath until it’s gone. If you’re in the area grab a pound or two

A big thank you to Chris Manning for coming along to help. Congratulations also to the winners who received calls.

We wrapped up a busy week of competitions yesterday. On Wednesday we took a once in a lifetime opportunity to cook in an event for Richard Petty. A great event to be a part of. No pictures of that pig, because no photographic evidence of that pig needed to exist. There will be days like that.

Yesterday we cooked in the Whole Hog State Championship. We came away with a 12th place finish out of the top 24 cooks in the state. The pig was a big improvement from Wednesday’s. Just have to figure out how to get the skin right again and we will be in good shape. But that’s the hardest part of what we do.

Congrats to everyone who earned calls this weekend. Some very well earned recognition all around.

Also I have to say a big thank you to some friends who have continued to encourage me (and fuss at me when it was needed) through a discouraging stretch of pigs that haven’t turned out like I know we’re capable of.

A little late posting but we were fortunate enough to come away with a 3rd place finish at the Pigskin Pigout this past weekend! A shoutout to my teammate this week, Tripp. He’s been asking us for months when he was going to get to come help cook a pig. He rocked it this week. He was eager to work and learn!

Congrats to Ryan Murphy on the big win and to everyone else who were called.
