We’re proud to serve our community downtown, across from our gorgeous courthouse 🤩 🏛️

One of the most celebrated small buildings in American architecture sits on a courthouse square in Shelby County, and most people drive right past it. 🏛️

Louis Sullivan is the man who shaped the modern skyscraper and taught Frank Lloyd Wright. Late in his career, after the big commissions dried up, he designed a handful of tiny banks for farm towns across the Midwest. Architects call them his jewel boxes. Sidney, Ohio has one. It is a compact block of richly colored brick with an enormous arched window and terra cotta ornament crawling across the front like something grown rather than built.

What makes it work is the setting. It sits across from the county courthouse on a real square, in a town that still has its blocks intact, so you come around the corner and it just appears between ordinary storefronts. There is no plaza, no visitor center, no admission. It is a bank on a corner, doing bank things, that happens to be studied in architecture programs.
