Dear All - If the heart of an entire town can be broken, ours has been. David Boyd Williams’s death marks the end of an all too brief, but incredibly bright, moment in Sewanee’s story. His brainchild, Lumière Bistro and Lounge, manifested David’s visions of community, kindness, and generous hospitality. Hence our loss is compounded by the unwelcome reality that Lumière simply cannot carry on without him. While the chandeliers may go dark for now, may Lumière’s light carry on in our hearts.

The day after Mother’s Day might hit differently for some folks. Especially, maybe for those who have experienced loss. A mother who passed away, a mother who lost the child(ren) who made her a mother, those whose longing to become a mother may never be fulfilled. The list can go on. It’s not only on Mother’s Day, it’s all the days that we share together that make this a special day.

I am ridiculously grateful for my mother (pictured here with me, my brother and his wife, and our Stepdad) at my nephew’s wedding last year.

At Lumière we celebrate the light of mothers who are, would be, or have been. And all of those who have loved and cared for us as their own.
