🌄 Wanderlust — a strong desire to travel, explore new places, or experience the world.
We all feel it from time to time. Yesterday, I had the rare opportunity to indulge that feeling.
I was scheduled to participate in a Department of Health mobile clinic in Tieton, WA, but I got up early and spent some time exploring the off-road trails nearby.
The road was rough, made up of broken, jagged basalt rock that kept me worried about a tire puncture and the very real possibility of being late to the clinic. My original plan was to drive for about 30 minutes and turn around, but the excitement of exploring somewhere new kept pulling me forward — just past the next bend, then over the next hill.
There is something about the landscape on the east side of our state that calls to me. The open space, ponderosa pines, sagebrush, golden hills, basalt canyons, and wide skies create the perfect backdrop for adventure. I was grateful to have my camera with me to capture a small piece of it.
Eventually, I turned around and headed to the clinic in the town square. Just a couple of hours after taking this photo, I found myself in a very different kind of exploration: a conversation with a couple about prediabetes, insulin resistance, nutrition, movement, and what they could do next.
We talked for more than 30 minutes, and I could tell it was a conversation they truly needed. They had been told their A1C was too high, but they had not been given enough time or education to understand what that meant. By the end, they left with a better understanding of insulin resistance and a practical plan to begin improving their health.
That moment reminded me that wanderlust is not limited to physical travel.
Sometimes it is the desire to explore a new road.
Sometimes it is the desire to understand your own body.
Sometimes it is the desire to learn, change, heal, and move toward a healthier future.
