It is a doom-tinted moment for the institution of late-night television. Stephen Colbert’s tenure as the host of the ‘Late Show’ ended May 21 amid the appearance of political pressure from the White House. NBC has cut back resources for Seth Meyers’s ‘Late Night,’ and ratings for Jimmy Fallon’s ‘Tonight Show’ have fallen. The other outspoken late-night hosts are siloed on more niche platforms like ‘The Daily Show’ and John Oliver’s ‘Last Week Tonight.’

As for Jimmy Kimmel — the longest-running, highest-profile host still standing in front of a studio audience every night — he won’t stop thumbing his nose at people in power.

Kimmel has had three major standoffs with President Donald Trump in less than a year. His late-night contract expires in May 2027, and it’s not clear whether he will negotiate a new one or announce a plan to retire. Last year around this time, he was wrapping up negotiations for his one-year contract extension. Usually, those conversations would be well underway by this point, but as of late May, he says they have not even begun. “I don’t know what ABC is going to want to do,” he says.

So what does the end look like? “I know I could go out in a blaze of glory and get a lot of applause for it, but it would be a very selfish thing to do,” he says.
