We have new art up again at the cafe, this time featuring our former neighbor .art! Kelly works with natural pigments and reclaimed materials on wooden panels, exploring identity and belonging through a maternal lens. The pieces are big and trippy and kind of feel like swimming through the rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria of a cell 🧬. Our art opening will take place this Friday 8/28 from 6-9pm and Mt Baker bluegrass/folk musician will be playing out on the garden level. Hope to see you for a summer’s last hurrah 🌻

While only human animals are allowed in the cafe, we were stoked to encounter this praying mantis yesterday afternoon chilling in the stairwell adjacent to the cafe. Praying mantises are considered a good omen across many cultures, representing stillness, patience and mindfulness. They are the only insects in the world that can rotate their head 180° and also the only invertebrates that have true stereoscopic 3D vision, making them excellent hunters. Thanks for coming to my entomological TED talk 🤓🪲🌎

What a delight to be recently featured by the alongside with several of our neighbors right here in Rainier Beach ❤️. Journalist Yuko Kodama did a great job of capturing the small pocket of businesses along this stretch of 57th Ave S and the ways we all strive to give back to our community, knowing we are better together.

Congratulations to our new neighbor who is having their grand soft opening today 8/8 from 10a - 3p! Mundo is a flower design studio owned by Paulina Castro DeLeon, whose parents immigrated and eventually met in Seattle. Paulina was raised and experienced many of her firsts in the 98118, including seeing her dream of having her own store front come to life. Mundo’s soft opening today will include bouquets and arrangements for purchase as well as complimentary ice cream scoops and a stem bar for folks to create their own bouquets. Mundo is two doors down from the cafe at 9276 57th Ave S. Come help welcome our new neighbor 💐💐💐

As we recently shared, our dear friend Mike Stegmann passed away on July 11, 2026. Sadly, there are more end of life expenses than expected. It is with great sadness that we are letting you know about the passing of our long time friend, Mike Stegmann. You may know Mike from his time at Redwing Cafe, or his 16 years at St Cloud’s. He also worked at The Gravity Bar and Surrogate Hostess in the late 80’s and 90’s. Mike was a q***r activist with Q***r Nation and Act Up and has always been a strong supporter of that world. He is well know in our community as a person who loved people, loved to carry your baby around and adored all dogs! Mike was in an accident on one of those damn green scooters that he did not recover from. (Please be safe on those things, or better yet, stay away from them.) We are hoping his afterlife includes a lovely non stop buffet of all of his favorite foods, lots of frolicking dogs, people who love him and probably some really nice w**d. Mike was preceded in death by his loyal companion, Tiger. Please send this lovely human off with the best of wishes .

It’s time for our annual post about our patio! We built this area alongside our community during the pandemic and the project was a beacon of light for us when the world was kind of…not. It’s a very peaceful place full of recycled materials and art and a garden and big beautiful bamboo - the perfect place to hang out on a summery day ☀️
