Memorial Day is a holiday celebrated in the United States on the last Monday of each May. The primary purpose of this day is to honor the men and women who died in the service of the US Army.
The Civil War, which ended in the spring of 1865, claimed more lives than any other conflict in US history and required the establishment of the country's first national cemeteries. In the late 1860s, Americans in various towns and cities began paying tributes to these countless fallen soldiers during the spring, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers.
