stands as a symbol of perseverance and longevity in a constantly changing world. 🌎

“It reminds me of where we have come from,” said owner Jean Nakayama. And thanks to a grant from and through the Backing Historic Small Restaurants Grant Program, this beloved eatery will have even more longevity.

The history and people behind Seattle's oldest sushi restaurant
by Aileen Imperial

In an industry where over 60 percent of independent establishments close during the first year, MANEKI has a legacy of resilience — surviving through World War II and the incarceration of Japanese Americans.

Born and raised on the same block as the restaurant, Yokoyama recalls MANEKI as being central to Seattle’s Japanese community since its inception. Yokoyama and longtime restaurant caretaker Jean Nakayama, have been key to the restaurant’s resiliency.

Ownership of MANEKI has changed hands only a few times in its century-long tenure. The longest owners were the Sato family; Tokuji Sato owned MANEKI between 1923 and the early 1960s, when he handed ownership over to his daughter, “Shi-chan” Virginia Ichikawa, and her husband Joe.

Nakayama says that the original castle-like MANEKI was ransacked and vandalized during the war.
After the war, the Sato family returned to Washington State and reopened MANEKI in the location that had been used as the storage space during the war, where MANEKI still operates today.

A Slimy Meal at MANEKI with Bizarre Foods’ Andrew Zimmern : 2011 gastrolust.com

Last night, I had a chance to meet Zimmern at MANEKI, chosen partly due to its heritage of being over 100 years old. Owner Jean Nakayama consulted with me about the menu and decided to do “neba neba” foods, thinking she’d slime Zimmern. He ate at the bar, with Nakayama playing co-star with her usual grace and gift of gab.

With prime seating in the adjoining tatami room, I watched Zimmern work his way through the gooey menu, tantalized by the textures and talking approvingly about the smells and flavors of the dishes. (“It’s cheesy, but in a good way,” he commented at one point.) The man knows food and appreciates Japanese cuisine.

With no fear of bizarre food, I told Nakayama “I’ll have what he’s having” and indulged in the house-made ika shiokara (fermented squid guts). I also enjoyed the rare opportunity to try imogara (dried taro stems), which Nakayama brought back from Chiba, Japan. She also served mekabu (the slimy, flowering sprout of kelp—some call it the ge****ls of kelp with its gooey threads) accompanied by kazunoko konbu (herring roe on kelp), which I’ve savored previously at Shiro’s. The roe is like bubble wrap in the mouth, each bite an explosion full of delicious ocean to swallow.

Motsu ni is a favorite dish I’ve had in Japan, as I’m game for tripe anytime. The meal ended with a neba neba bowl of natto (fermented soybeans), okra, and raw maguro (tuna), and ikura (salmon eggs).
..He (Zimmern) was thrilled with his meal at MANEKI and all of his experiences so far in Seattle, and was looking forward to digging up some geoduck today.

MANEKI mentioned on -- The Absolute Best Sushi In The US 🇺🇸

The owners of MANEKI reckons that its long history means that it was the first sushi house in all of Seattle. In fact, it is one of the oldest Japanese restaurants in all of the country. Only one of us was there, so there's no room to argue. This may not be the most inventive or boundary-pushing sushi you've ever had, but it is an original. That's not something easily replicated. The expansive menu covers all the sushi basics a hungry eater wants, and plenty they never knew they needed. Bring your family, because MANEKI specializes in large, shared- style plates and a homey, casual atmosphere.

Thank you Amy for this tasty MANEKI memory! 📸 You captured our fresh generous cuts of Sashimi and our hand-forged Takoyaki.

We can't wait for "Mom" to make an appearance again behind the bar too.

Had the utmost pleasure of eating at tonight. We were lucky to find seats at the bar, as there were no openings in the dining room until 8:30. Lo and behold, luck was so on our side that it was Fusae “Mom” Yokoyama’s night to bartend. For nearly 60 years, this sweet, sweet woman has been working at Maneki, Seattle’s first sushi bar. Not only did we have the best sushi of our lives tonight, but we had the greatest time sharing food with and gaining recs from other patrons at the bar. This will certainly go down as one of our top foodie experiences ever 🍣🤗❤️🙏💯

✅MANEKI -- 38 Essential Restaurants In Seattle, Winter 2022

- - -
Seattle’s oldest sushi restaurant has been open since 1904, surviving the incarceration of its owners during WWII. MANEKI remains as resilient as ever: Since the pandemic started, the Japantown restaurant has offered online takeout orders for its large menu of sushi rolls, udon noodles and Japanese comfort food. Indulge in the beef sukiyaki or unagi donburi, or make a takeout meal out of snacks, like the spicy cod karaage, potato croquettes and onigiri (rice balls).

. . But the mackerel at Maneki is the best. My favorite restaurant in Seattle is the kind of place we’d typically bring out-of-town friends and family, directly from SeaTac airport, to give them the warmest of welcomes. We would reserve the “tatami room,” a private dining space just past the bar full of regulars, by the (normally) packed dining room and the kitchen. Before getting settled in the sunken seating area, we’d ask for a few orders of saba shio, or grilled mackerel, along with a couple sushi rolls and the first round of tea, warm sake, and beer.
