Last Writer Salon before the summer break kicks in … the zines are zined, the biffles are biffling, before long Peter Kline will stride in, readers will test their microphones and choice seats will be snagged. A little white wine, a little tea …the cafe book collection will grow, friends will be made, and a few poems will find new minds to live in, long after this June Sunday has set.

This last month has felt more like a country song than original folk. The espresso machine broke down and took 30% of our sales with it. Electric and water works. Staff getting sick. Josh’s longest day clocked in at 22 hours (no joke, 6am to 4am). Saying goodbye to our beloved Ambie (who will get a proper tribute later). Through all of it, when we sit on the floor in the kitchen before bed and wonder, how are we still doing this, the thing that shines is: you. Josh will tell me about regulars who sit in the garden as they navigate their lives. He’ll reiterate his mission and how much it all means. Beautiful music and art. Open mic. Cafe friends who keep showing up and supporting, your appreciation for the kitchen wizardry. This is a season. Fingers crossed, at some point we’ll serve fully, the way we love to again. Thank you for standing by us 🩵🦋🩵

When you start peeling the onion (or electrical wires) of a 100+ year old building, you run into all sorts of surprises. We’re hoping some of our small fixes will calm Fill, our trusty dishwasher. Can we tame the chaos before opening mic?! We’ll try our darndest!! Note: no espresso yet, still much work before we can put the new-old machine into service, but at least there will be music!! 🎵

Found something shiny online, a used machine from Burlingame that was available immediately. Josh’s papa happens to be in town and helped swop out blue Victoria for copper Victoria in the dead of night 😂 Today, it’s plumbers and electricians to help us get ready, then Josh will learn it and then the baristas will get training because this one is a vintage tank that gives you a serious workout when you pull a shot! It’s probably a temporary solution but it is very pretty 🩵 No promises yet on when we can serve espresso yet but know we’re working hard to make it happen!!

While we’re down, we’re cleaning the art walls, patching and doing paint touchups throughout - volunteers would be sooo welcome! Stop by if you’re free and we can do a little barn raising!

The cafe needs to take a couple of sick days. We’ll be closed for maintenance and repairs Monday Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

We’re very sorry to not be open, you know how much we love making cappuccinos and giving the neighborhood a spot to relax, work and create. We may not be back to 100% immediately, espresso machines can be complicated affairs, but we’re working hard on fixing the things that can be fixed.

Nothing steamed for a bit! Our amazing Victoria Arduino espresso machine blew her top one last time. We are sourcing a new machine. Until then, consider this your sign to have beer&a biscuit, or champagne and a biscuit (brunch it, baby!!) or drip, or tea. We vote for champagne. Or lemonade 😂 🍋

The beautiful weather beckons and Josh says we can go home … as soon as the biscuit croutons are dried. So, there is now a competitor activity to watching paint dry!! He is happily practicing drum polyrhythms while we wait. Biscuit croutons go into the Mitch Rocket salad, which also gets maple glazed walnuts (glazed here, of course), poppy seed dressing (made in house so that he could get just the right balance of sweetness), onions and mandarin oranges. Please, no one send him any articles about some obscure technique he can apply to the oranges 🍊😂

Burning the midnight oil! Be gentle with us this week, two baristas have fallen ill and there are some looong days as we fill in the gaps. Who knew we have so many special little things to prep?! One bonus … you only get to see this view of the lemon tree muse when it’s dark all around ✨🌔. We’re closing early (2pm) on Tuesday and Wednesday to accommodate. Sorry if this forces you to get coffee elsewhere, we know it’s not the same! 😉

Holiday hours tomorrow! Cafe will be open from 7:30 - 2:30 pm (not 4pm like regular Mondays). Come early enough to snap up the dreamy new garlic confit and rosemary biscuit - all the sweetness and umami of garlic 🧄 tempered by the gentleness of a confit. We think this may just be our best biscuit yet, but will let you decide!

You may, like me, have been mistaken into thinking New Years Day is a pajama day, maybe with a nice hike later? Josh had other ideas! Last year’s project was the book nook utility shelf, this year, it’s a knock box improvement. Today, we’ll be prepping to get all your biscuits, pastries and curry ready for reopening tomorrow!!

One more day of Bazaar treats and delights and then it’s time to hibernate! Thank you for being such an amazing community, for all the smiles and cheer, small jokes and of course, for loving great coffee, music, biscuits, chocolate and rooibos cakes, all the things Josh loves to add his smoked salts to, table mountain mists and honey lavender lattes … it’s staggering when we look back to see how many thousands of each of these walked out the cafe this year!! Rest well till 2026, when we will no doubt subject you to brand new experiments! Find someone in your circle who needs some extra encouragement this holiday season, take good care of yerselves. 🎄🩵🎄

Crept out of our (still unpowered) house and walked along eerily dark streets to assess damage at the cafe. It’s toss-out time, we’re clearing it all and starting afresh, hoping we can get stock, even if we need to source from other towns. The planned solstice celebration is still on - we’ll just have a reduced menu and offerings! Alt milk lattes, biscuits and whatever we can replenish as we go will be available!
