A huge thank you to TILIT | Chef Apparel & Hospitality Workwear for having us at Preheat SF on Monday. What an incredible event — it was so good to see so many fellow industry people outside of their restaurants just hanging out and having a good time. That’s what it’s all about.

Congratulations to Reem Assil on winning the burrito battle. I’m not going to lie, losing sucked, especially when I found out there was a trophy involved, haha. So consider this your official notice Reem’s, don’t leave the trophy in plane sight cause we are going to steal it.

We are planning on bringing the burrito as a special in the next few weeks, we will make sure to let you know when its ready!

FRIED CATFISH PO’BOY POPUP
Friday, October 30th · 4–8pm or until we sell out
In store only, no delivery

Growing up, my family would visit my grandparents in Natchez, Mississippi, where my mom was from, and we would go to this place called C**k of the Walk. They served fried catfish platters with collard greens, hushpuppies and cornbread that was flipped table-side in a small cast iron skillet. The cornbread didn’t always land in the pan, haha. That place lives in my head rent free. I also started my career as a fry cook in New Orleans so this whole popup feels like it’s bringing me back to my roots. Once a fry cook, always a fry cook.

The menu:
Fried Catfish Po’Boy
Pimento Mac ’n Cheese
Herby ‘Slaw
Banana Pudding
Red Kool-Aid Hurricanes

All of these things are connected to my childhood and resonate deep within me. This is the kind of thing we want to do more of at Sandy’s — popups that let us showcase what we can do and bring out menu items that we can’t offer on the regular. Come on by.

Recipe Development in action!

I’ve wanted to do pimento fries for a while now and we are finally getting to testing them out. This is round one and we are already pretty close. We need to make a few adjustments on the toppings and find the perfect fry but thats about it.

Haight Street Fair is just around the corner on Sunday September 20th so we figured this would be the perfect place to bring them to you. We will have tent out front of the shop and will be selling our Hush Puppy Corn Dogs and Pimento fries. The shop will be open so you can still get your muffs and cookies inside.

Hope to see you out there on Sunday September 20th!!!

Everyone, meet Meaterson 👀🥪

Thank you all so much for your name suggestions — we had some incredible ones. M**fy the Hunger Slayer, Olive-ia M**frigo, Madame Oliveyah, A Lotta M**f — y’all did not disappoint. It’s always so much fun to reach out to our community and see what you come up with. But in the end, Meaterson just felt right.

A huge shoutout to Casey Rebecca Nunes for bringing the creative inspiration to keep Sandy’s weird. She built this thing from scratch and I think it might be the best thing we’ve ever made in this shop, and that’s saying a lot. Meaterson will be living at the shop so come say hey to the newest member of the team.

The SF Chronicle came out and spent time with us before and during Outside Lands this year and put together an incredible article about what goes into being a food vendor at the festival. I still can’t believe this was our 5th year. Our first year we were still a popup and didn’t even have a permanent location to direct new customers to. Now we’ve been a brick and mortar for three years and this festival has been a part of our story every step of the way.

What most people don’t see is the months of preparation that go into a three day festival. The prep schedule, order guide, packout list, volunteer schedule — all of it starts way before we show up at Golden Gate Park. What you see at the festival is the culmination of all of those hours with the goal of following our timeline and executing while we’re out there. This was the easiest year mentally and physically but as I’m getting older it still takes a huge toll. We load everything out Monday morning, bring it back to the shop, clean it all up and then try to rest. But really it takes about a week to recover mentally and physically.

Thank you to Irene and Florence from the Chronicle for spending time with us and telling this story. Thank you to Sandy’s Summer Camp — the 25+ volunteers who show up year after year to make this thing happen. And thank you to all of our fellow food vendors who grind it out every year in those tents. It’s a special community out there.

The Sandy’s sticker pack is here 🐊

First up, the gator and Camp Sandy’s. christopher macdougall Casey’s partner, designed both of these. We gave him zero direction and just let him do his thing and this is what he came back with. That’s the best way to work with creative people — just let them cook.

Next, Make M**fulettas Not War. This one came from Deep Fried Advertising , our branding team back in New Orleans. It’s been a Sandy’s motto from the beginning and it was about time we turned it into a sticker.

And then there’s the M**f Daddy. Casey Rebecca Nunes refined the design and made it sparkly because of course she did. This one might be my favorite.

$10 for the 4-pack, available at the counter. Stick ‘em on your laptop, water bottle, car, whatever, we don’t care, just buy them and do what you want.

What’s up everyone? Outside Lands is almost here and we’re so stoked. Every year, the #1 thing people ask us at the booth is to offer a veggie option for the hush puppy corndog. Well, we listened and are giving the people what they want. Now you vegetarians can get in on the action.

What’s in it? A veggie dog wrapped in our hush puppy batter — corn kernels, jalapeño and scallion, fried to order. Served with our red remoulade: smoked paprika, horseradish, plenty of heat and acid. Honestly good enough to eat on its own.

Three days only, August 7–9, and only at Outside Lands — you won’t find this one at the shop. Full menu and booth location drop later this week, so keep an eye here to find us.

I’ll never forget getting the call from Outside Lands about whether our application to be a food vendor was approved. I was in New Orleans at a coffee shop on Magazine Street, it was hot as hell outside and the coffee was helping to nurse a pretty solid hangover. I pick up the phone and Tanya Kollar is on the other end delivering the news that Sandy’s was going to Outside Lands. Sandy’s was still a popup in those days and we had just left our popup location and didn’t have anything else scheduled which also meant we didn’t have anywhere to prep for this massive festival. So I reached out to our community and an incredible human being (Charles Chocolates )offered up a space for us to work out of.

Looking back on the whole experience, it’s amazing how much you don’t know until you throw yourself into the fire and hope you come out the other side. I can’t believe it’s year 5!!! That’s wild to me. We’ve forged new friendships and strengthened some along the way during Sandy’s summer camp and I’ve made so many friends in the industry through this festival that I’m forever grateful for.

I’m really looking forward to jumping back into the carney life for the weekend, it suits me well. Come find us out there and say hey.

In New Orleans, you never really need an excuse to throw a party, it just kind of happens naturally, and I think that’s where this is coming from. We don’t really need a reason, but the SF Marathon running right past Sandy’s this Sunday is a pretty good one anyway. Back home, after a long night out in the Quarter, there were plenty of nights I’d end up at Café du Monde while it was still open 24 hours, slurring my order but laser-focused on a hot plate of beignets and a chocolate milk. So this Sunday we’re flipping that — same beignets, same chocolate milk, just a little earlier in the day and a lot more sober.

So — welcome to Café du Sandy’s, a one-morning beignet and coffee pop-up.
🗓️ Sunday, July 26th · 8–11am
📍 Sandy’s, 1457 Haight
🥐 Beignets — $10 for 3
☕ NOLA cold brew — $6
🥛 Chocolate milk — $4

We’ll have music going all morning, so pull up, grab a coffee, and stick around to cheer the runners on with us — they trained months for this and a little noise from the sidewalk goes a long way. Come say hey.

Yooooooo, the knuckle(tomato) sandy is back!!!! This is my favorite time of year for produce in the bay area and tomatoes are starting to show. So, with that being said, lets reintroduce the tomato sandy:

Heirloom tomatoes with Maldon salt
Duke’s Mayo
House made Salsa Macha
Toasted Sourdough Deli bread

Thats it, thats all it takes to make one of my favorite sandy’s. Keep it simple, let the tomatoes talk for themselves. The salsa mocha adds a smokey crunch that rounds it out just right. This sandy is also messy as all hell so please be forewarned, eat it over the tray or you will be wearing it.

Now hiring ✨ We’re looking for a full-time team member to join our crew on Haight Street.

Sandy’s is a small but mighty team — you’ll be doing a bit of everything, from counter service to prep. We’re a New Orleans-inspired sandwich shop that’s built something special in the heart of Haight-Ashbury, and we’re looking for someone who wants to be part of it.

Good energy required. Everything else we can teach.

It’s “summertime” in SF and watermelons are finally coming in hot. Growing up in New Orleans, summer meant sitting on the porch eating watermelon and having seed spitting competitions with my brothers. That’s one of those core memories that never leaves you. So when watermelon season hits, it just brings me back to those days.

The whole idea around this salad is to keep it fresh and summer inspired. It’s loaded with delicious watermelon, fresh mint and cilantro, queso fresco, cajun spiced pepitas for the savory crunch, thin thin slices of jalapeño and a jalapeño dressing. The dressing is made from fresh and pickled jalapeños, garlic oil, sugar and salt. It’s not really on the spicy side but loaded with flavor and really compliments everything going into this salad.

Available as long as watermelons are in season and still tasting delicious. Limited quantities daily.
