Maha Navami
The Story of Durga and Mahishasura
Long ago, according to Hindu mythology, a powerful demon named Mahishasura sought to become ruler of the three worlds. Through years of intense penance, he earned a boon from Lord Brahma: no man or god would be able to kill him.
Mahishasura believed he had secured immortality. He had never considered that a woman might possess the power to defeat him.
Emboldened by his newfound protection, he assembled a vast army and waged war against the gods. One by one, they were defeated. Mahishasura seized control of the heavens, drove the gods from their kingdom, and established himself as ruler.
With no power among them capable of defeating him, the gods turned to Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva for help.
As the three great deities heard of Mahishasura's tyranny, their anger gave rise to an extraordinary radiance. Brilliant energy poured from them, joined by the divine power of the other gods, until the light gathered into the form of a woman.
She was Durga.
The gods bestowed upon her their most powerful weapons. Shiva gave her his trident, Vishnu his discus, and Indra his thunderbolt. Armed with their combined strength and riding a magnificent lion, Durga set out to confront Mahishasura.
When the demon king learned that a woman had come to challenge him, he underestimated her. He sent his armies against her, expecting an easy victory.
But Durga was unlike any opponent they had encountered.
She destroyed the demon armies, defeated their commanders, and finally confronted Mahishasura himself.
The battle between Durga and Mahishasura was fierce. Mahishasura possessed the extraordinary ability to change his form, transforming himself into different creatures as he fought. He charged as a powerful buffalo, attacked as a lion, and assumed the form of a warrior, each transformation bringing renewed strength and fury.
Yet no matter what form he took, Durga remained steadfast.
For nine days, the struggle continued. The heavens trembled beneath the force of their battle, and the gods watched as the fate of their world hung in the balance.
At last, Mahishasura returned to his most formidable form, a monstrous buffalo. He charged toward Durga with tremendous force, determined to crush the goddess who had destroyed his armies.
But Durga stood her ground.
As the demon lunged forward, she struck him with her trident. When Mahishasura attempted to emerge from his buffalo form, Durga delivered the final blow, bringing an end to his reign of terror.
The heavens were liberated, the gods regained their kingdom, and balance was restored to the three worlds.
Yet the significance of Durga's victory extended far beyond the defeat of a powerful demon.
Mahishasura had possessed extraordinary strength, but he had used that strength to dominate others. His belief in his own invincibility had blinded him to the possibility that someone he considered beneath him could bring about his downfall.
Durga's victory marked the end of Mahishasura's tyranny, but the story did not disappear with the passing of generations. It became part of a sacred tradition that continues to unite families and communities across Nepal.
During Dashain, Goddess Durga is honored as a manifestation of Shakti, the divine feminine power believed to sustain, protect, and transform the universe. Her battle with Mahishasura remains one of the most recognized expressions of that power, commemorating the triumph of good over evil and the restoration of dharma, or cosmic order.
Mahishasura believed that strength gave him the right to rule over others. Durga demonstrated that true strength carries a greater responsibility: to protect what is vulnerable, confront injustice, and restore what has been lost.
The lesson is not that power itself is good or evil, but that its value is determined by the purpose it serves.
At Himalayan Cafe, we believe this principle has meaning far beyond the ancient story. Through more than three decades of business development, our President, Kapil Adhikari, has built his work around a belief that opportunity becomes more meaningful when it extends beyond individual success.
Whether through entrepreneurship, mentorship, job creation, or supporting local communities, our ambition is not simply to build successful businesses, but to create opportunities through which others can build successful lives.
As we honor Maha Navami, we celebrate the enduring values of protection, responsibility, and the belief that the greatest measure of strength is what we make possible for others.
From all of us at Himalayan Group, we wish the people of Nepal and families celebrating around the world a blessed and meaningful Dashain.
