The Buckhorn Saloon and Museum The Buckhorn Saloon is where it all began—where history was made and legend lives. It is where Teddy The bar features locally brewed beers on draft.
(1901)

It is where Teddy Roosevelt recruited Rough Riders and Pancho Villa is rumored to have planned the Mexican Revolution. Many of the original furnishings still grace today's Buckhorn Saloon, including the back-bar which was hand-crafted of marble and cherry wood. You might also like one of our delicious and icy Prickly Pear Margaritas; it’s a Texas favorite!

There is a story in San Antonio about a bar that never asked for cash. Back in the 1880s, a saloonkeeper on Houston Street started trading drinks for deer antlers and longhorn horns instead of coins, and over the decades the walls filled in so completely that regulars joked you could get lost in the collection before you ever found your b**r. 🦌

By the time the Buckhorn Saloon's horn and antler walls were finally counted, the tally ran into the tens of thousands, every single piece collected one trade at a time from hunters, ranchers, and cowhands passing through on their way to somewhere else. Nobody set out to build a museum. It just happened, one antler at a time, because a bartender thought a horn was worth more to him than a nickel and the customers were happy to agree.

What gets us about this one is how ordinary it must have felt at the time. Just a guy running a bar, making a deal that made sense that day, decade after decade, until it turned into something nobody could have planned. That is a very San Antonio kind of history, quiet and accidental and only obvious looking back. Would you have traded a good set of antlers for a round of drinks back then, or held onto them?
