Waldmann introduces the Stange!

These special glasses originate in the pubs of Köln (Cologne), Germany, home to Kölsch beer!

Traditionally used in the service of Kölsch and later Düsseldorf’s Altbiers, just up the Rhine, these small glasses concentrate the beer’s aromatics in a tight cylinder that directs the scent directly to the nose, making the smell just as important to the enjoyment of the beer as the taste and mouthfeel. Stange pours are meant to be drunk quickly to preserve the beers low temperature and high carbonation.

Now we journey East and across the border into Czechia, where the great lagers of Plzeň have come to define the style. Here we find our special pours!

Hladinka- a normal beer pour.
Šynt- (“Schnitt”) half foam and half beer.
Mlíko- An all foam pour. Traditional in Czech pubs, the foam concentrates the beer’s rich aromatics and spicy hops. Don’t wait for the foam to settle! This baby is meant to be drunk quickly and in a single gulp!

Waldmann wishes a Happy Juneteenth to all!

Oft considered America’s second Independence Day, Juneteenth (June 19th) celebrates the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in the furthest reaches of the vanquished Confederacy. While the Emancipation Proclamation was issued during the war and the 13th Amendment, abolishing slavery (in most cases), was ratified by the end of 1865, many enslaved persons didn’t learn the news until 1866, when Union armies moved across the entirety of the South to enforce reconstruction.

A celebration of black resilience, cultural impact, and enduring strength, Juneteenth celebrations spread across the north and even to parts of Mexico during the Great Migration and the day remained a palpable reminder of the origins of the fight during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s and 60’s, a hundred years later.

Now, more than ever, here in this pre-Civil War era saloon, we celebrate this moment in the ongoing march toward liberation. To all those who shoulder the heavy burden of liberation for all, not just for some; to all those for whom justice has been too long denied; to all those who carried us this far — the ones who came before, we raise a glass to you. Happy Juneteenth! 🍻
